Download or read book A Collector s View of Collecting Art written by Fima Lifshitz M.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was prepared by researching publicly available information, selected references, published books and from information obtained from artists. I have had the pleasure of knowing many of the painters and sculptors personally and over many decades; much of the information presented in this book is from them. The art depicted was all in my collection, although some pieces have been sold, most have been gifted – donated to museums and other institutions – prior to the completion of this book. I thank all of the artists who created the art that has given me utmost pleasure over many years. I have wonderful memories of time spent with the artists who became my friends. Additionally, I thank all those who appreciated my art collection and helped with the downsizing. This painful experience was somehow lessened, as the art is now in good hands, to be enjoyed by many now and in future generations. Foremost, I acknowledge my wife, Jere, who has been a partner in my life; she is the one who has endured all the toils, trials and tribulations of my collecting art, and to share with me our great journey of the “Art of Living with Art.”

Book excerpt: The quotable Ai Weiwei This collection of quotes demonstrates the elegant simplicity of Ai Weiwei's thoughts on key aspects of his art, politics, and life. A master at communicating powerful ideas in astonishingly few words, Ai Weiwei is known for his innovative use of social media to disseminate his views. The short quotations presented here have been carefully selected from articles, tweets, and interviews given by this acclaimed Chinese artist and activist. The book is organized into six categories: freedom of expression; art and activism; government, power, and moral choices; the digital world; history, the historical moment, and the future; and personal reflections. Together, these quotes span some of the most revealing moments of Ai Weiwei's eventful career—from his risky investigation into student deaths in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake to his arbitrary arrest in 2011—providing a window into the mind of one of the world's most electrifying and courageous contemporary artists. Select Quotes from the Book: On Freedom of Expression "Say what you need to say plainly, and then take responsibility for it." "A small act is worth a million thoughts." "Liberty is about our rights to question everything." On Art and Activism "Everything is art. Everything is politics." "The art always wins. Anything can happen to me, but the art will stay." "Life is art. Art is life. I never separate it. I don't feel that much anger. I equally have a lot of joy." On Government, Power, and Making Moral Choice "Once you've tasted freedom, it stays in your heart and no one can take it. Then, you can be more powerful than a whole country." "I feel powerless all the time, but I regain my energy by making a very small difference that won't cost me much." "Tips on surviving the regime: Respect yourself and speak for others. Do one small thing every day to prove the existence of justice." On the Digital World "Only with the Internet can a peasant I have never met hear my voice and I can learn what's on his mind. A fairy tale has come true." "The Internet is uncontrollable. And if the Internet is uncontrollable, freedom will win. It's as simple as that." "The Internet is the best thing that could have happened to China." On History, the Historical Moment, and the Future "If a nation cannot face its past, it has no future." "We need to get out of the old language." "The world is a sphere, there is no East or West." Personal Reflection "I've never planned any part of my career—except being an artist. And I was pushed into that corner because I thought being an artist was the only way to have a little freedom." "Anyone fighting for freedom does not want to totally lose their freedom." "Expressing oneself is like a drug. I'm so addicted to it."

Book The House of Fragile Things

Download or read book The House of Fragile Things written by James McAuley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful history of Jewish art collectors in France, and how an embrace of art and beauty was met with hatred and destruction In the dramatic years between 1870 and the end of World War II, a number of prominent French Jews—pillars of an embattled community—invested their fortunes in France’s cultural artifacts, sacrificed their sons to the country’s army, and were ultimately rewarded by seeing their collections plundered and their families deported to Nazi concentration camps. In this rich, evocative account, James McAuley explores the central role that art and material culture played in the assimilation and identity of French Jews in the fin-de-siècle. Weaving together narratives of various figures, some familiar from the works of Marcel Proust and the diaries of Jules and Edmond Goncourt—the Camondos, the Rothschilds, the Ephrussis, the Cahens d'Anvers—McAuley shows how Jewish art collectors contended with a powerful strain of anti-Semitism: they were often accused of “invading” France’s cultural patrimony. The collections these families left behind—many ultimately donated to the French state—were their response, tragic attempts to celebrate a nation that later betrayed them.

Book The Passionate Collector

Download or read book The Passionate Collector written by Roy R. Neuberger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-05-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few living persons have served the Metropolitan Museum of Art-indeed, the entire world of art and art museums-longer, or with more distinction, than Roy Neuberger. A man of taste, passion, persistence, and generosity, he has shared much of his great private collection with the public, and for generations has supported activities that bring people to museums, and motivate them to return again and again. Now, this giant of a man has recorded eighty years of his life-and the result is entertaining, illuminating, and, like the tireless gentleman himself, inspiring." -Philippe de Montebello, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Equal to his passion for investing is Roy Neuberger's love for art-which he has collected and encouraged for eight decades. In The Passionate Collector: Eighty Years in the World of Art, you'll follow this fascinating financial figure and great patron of the arts from the streets of 1920s Paris to the museums of New York as he develops the eye of a connoisseur and begins to collect great contemporary art. Vivid detail puts you in the center of the action as Neuberger collects the brilliant artists of his time-Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Edward Hopper; works with legendary art dealers Paul Rosenberg, Betty Parsons, Sidney Janis, and Leo Castelli; and befriends avid collectors, including the incomparable Duncan Phillips. You'll follow Neuberger as he strives to further the cause of contemporary American artists by exhibiting, lending, and donating from his growing collection, and becoming an activist for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney. You'll also see how the Neuberger Museum of Art was created at the urging of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and how it continues to fascinate art enthusiasts today. Part personal memoir, part history of art, The Passionate Collector offers a unique view of twentieth-century American art from a man who has lived it.

Book Handbook of Practical Planning for Artists Art Collectors and Their Advisors

Download or read book Handbook of Practical Planning for Artists Art Collectors and Their Advisors written by Ramsay H. Slugg and published by American Bar Association. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art is an asset of passion, as author Ramsay H. Slugg begins this invaluable resource, yet it has unique and important financial characteristics. These elements make art possibly the most difficult asset to incorporate into an overall estate and financial plan. This updated and expanded edition of Handbook of Practical Planning for Artists, Art Collectors, and Their Advisors addresses two essential elements of art ownership: planning for the ultimate disposition of the art, including how to incorporate the wealth represented by the art into estate and financial planning; and the practical considerations for owners of the artwork as they actively collect and plan for the art's eventual disposition. Following a brief, general discussion of the art market, the author introduces and explains a client-focused process that can be used when advising collectors. Among the steps in the process includes explaining the income, estate, and gift tax consequences of various options as well as the important and often emotional non-tax considerations of collecting and disposing of art. The book discusses some charitable solutions available as these are often especially appealing options to many collectors and their advisors. As more artists achieve commercial success, their planning needs increase as the financial aspects of their work increases. Further, as artists often leave significant amounts of their work behind, inventory and legacy management become especially significant. This guide considers the unique issues involved when planning for artists, as well as the planning considerations and different tax rules that apply to self-created artwork rather than to capital assets, which is how works of art held by collectors and investors are classified. In addition to providing enlightening case studies, the book looks at the roles of other advisors involved in these decisions. This guide is written to appeal to all levels of knowledge, and accessible not only to trusts and estates professionals, but also for the collectors themselves as well as the many other professionals involved, including art advisors, risk management advisors, valuation advisors, and financial planners.

Book excerpt: "Funny and whimsical. There are wonderful asides ... It is also poignant." —The New York Times Beloved Parisian artist Pierre Le-Tan, known for designing New Yorker magazine covers and collaborations with fashion houses, summons up memories of inveterate art collectors in this utterly charming illustrated volume. He evokes fascinating, sometimes troubled figures through an array of intriguing and curious tales. With seventy of his distinctive pen and ink drawings—in vibrant color with meticulous cross-hatching—A Few Collectors opens a window onto the vast or minuscule world created by collectors out of a mix of extravagance and obstinacy. It recounts encounters in Paris, the Côte d’Azur, North Africa, London and New York, where Le-Tan’s subjects have amassed a range of treasures. Some involve famed figures like former Louvre Museum director Pierre Rosenberg. Others are insolvent aristocrats, princes of film and fashion, expatriate dandies, and flat-out obsessive eccentrics. Le-Tan devotes perhaps his finest chapter to himself.

Lim's private collection, which he also opened up to the public during Art Basel Hong Kong, is now considered one of the city's cultural highlights.
