Book Co operative Canada

Download or read book Co operative Canada written by Brett Fairbairn and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shift in US bank policy. A demonstration in Greece. A tsunami in Japan. In recent times, these kinds of events have had profound effects on the economic well-being of Canadians. In such a heavily globalized environment, it may seem that only large corporations with access to transnational resources can operate successfully, but Co-operative Canada demonstrates that this is not the case. Despite economic pressures following the 2008 recession, co-operatives in Canada are thriving. In fact, there are approximately nine thousand co-ops across the nation with a combined membership of about 18 million members – more than half the population of Canada. Drawing on the results of a large research project that examined co-operatives in communities from coast to coast to coast, Co-operative Canada reveals how Canadians are using the co-operative model to collectively respond to the forces of globalization through local, community-owned enterprises. It does this through specific examples that vividly describe the pragmatic realities of the communities these co-ops serve.

Book A Strategy of Development for the Canadian Housing Cooperative Movement

Download or read book A Strategy of Development for the Canadian Housing Cooperative Movement written by Leonard X. Pomerleau and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the advantages and disadvantages of four strategies used by various continuing housing co-operatives to develop the co-op housing sector in Canada. It describes the values served by these different strategies, and analyses the continuing housing co-operatives from a social science perspective. The author then proposes a new development strategy which he calls "institutional innovation diffusion". It combines the more successful aspects from two of the above strategies, with the concept of facilitators or advocates (a variation of resource groups) who provide technical services to new local continuing housing co-ops. The new strategy underscores the importance of learning and communication processes.

Book Developing Worker Co operatives

Download or read book Developing Worker Co operatives written by John E. Jordan and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In this paper, John Jordan initiates a discussion regarding a model for worker co-operatives. This model should clarify the application of co-operative principles to a new form of co-operative. The balance between ownership of the co-operative by individuals, and by workers in common, needs to be established. In addition to discussing these matters, the paper provides a guide to resources on worker co-operatives. Jack Quarter provides an update on worker co-operatives in English Canada. Included is an overview of government (both provincial and federal) attitudes toward this relatively new initiative.

Book Cooperatives and Local Development

Download or read book Cooperatives and Local Development written by Christopher D. Merrett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. The market economy has changed profoundly over the past two centuries. In the nineteenth century, business enterprises were largely single-product ventures, managed directly by the owners and rooted within national economies. In the twentieth century, firms employed managers who were not owners. Firms also evolved into multiproduct, multiunit entities that could employ thousands of workers. In the twenty-first century, many firms operate on a global scale, taking advantage of free trade policies and rapidly evolving computer and telecommunications technologies. Given this potential, it is crucial that producers, consumers, economic developers, and researchers realize how co-ops can promote local economic and community development. Hence, this book includes the perceptions of experts on a variety of cooperative issues, including the challenges involved in starting a co-op and in understanding its impact on surrounding communities. This book can be especially useful because it provides the theoretical foundations and practical applications of cooperative behavior.

The section then turns its attention to the co-operative movement's vision of health & social services, and presents a history of health care co-operatives in Canada. The second section is intended for both development resource persons and proponents of co-operative projects. It identifies needs & different co-operative models, and compares different types of organization to show the advantages & drawbacks of each. The final section is aimed primarily at those who have decided to start up a health care co-operative. It describes seven steps in the start-up process and the factors to be considered in drawing up a business plan. At the end of the section is a list of resources available within the co-operatives network.
