Book A Clwyd Anthology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dewi Roberts
  • Publisher : Seren Books
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book A Clwyd Anthology written by Dewi Roberts and published by Seren Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Airbus at Broughton to the castle at Rhuddlan; from the resorts of the coast to the International Eisteddfod at Llangollen; from the farms of the Vales to the mountains of Hiraethog; from the English of Wrexham to the Welsh of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, the county of Clwyd - the soon to disappear Clwyd - encompasses hugely differing cultures within its boundaries. Natives and visitors, from the seventeenth century to the present day, have found Clwyd an unfailing source of inspiration. This anthology collects their writing to provide a fascinating commentary on life in the county, recording the events, the history and the people. As this century has progressed change has been the key note: agriculture has declined, collieries and steelmaking have come and gone, and tourism is the latest growth industry; religion too has declined from its medieval pre-eminence; old county towns like Denbeigh have been eclipsed by burgeoning Wrexham and Rhyl. Editor Dewi Roberts has produced an anthology which defines what it is to live in Clwyd. Dewi Roberts, who lives in Denbighshire, is well known in Wales as an anthologist. His regional compilations include Visitors' Delight and A Clwyd Anthology. He has published a travel book, The Land of Old Renown, and is an essaysist and reviewer for a number of publications. Apart from literature, his main interest is local history.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Drama

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Drama written by Christina M. Fitzgerald and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past generation has been an extraordinarily active one in medieval drama scholarship; our appreciation of the range of medieval drama has been significantly broadened, and our understanding of certain medieval genres—most notably, biblical drama—has been fundamentally altered. The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has been widely praised for the degree to which it has taken this scholarship into account in its selection of and presentation of medieval plays. Now Broadview launches a new anthology that takes those plays as its base while expanding very substantially beyond them to represent the full range of drama in English (and, where strong connections exist, in French, Latin, Cornish, and Welsh as well) through to 1576. In all, over forty plays are included. Each work has been fully annotated and is prefaced by a substantial introduction. In many cases the language is to some extent modernized in order to make the plays more accessible to readers today.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Arthurian Literature

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Arthurian Literature written by Kathy Cawsey and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This teaching anthology collects texts from the vast archive of medieval Arthurian literature. It includes selections from mainstream canonical authors, such as Geoffrey of Monmouth and Malory, and more peripheral works, such as the Melech Artus (a 12th-century Hebrew text) and the Dutch Morien (featuring a black knight). Characters and authors showcase the diversity of race, religion, gender, and gender orientation of the Arthurian tradition. The anthology and its accompanying website offer a variety of genres, ranging from visual art to historical chronicles and from romance to drama. Arthurian works, while concentrated in England, France, and Wales, are found across medieval Europe, and thus this anthology includes texts from Iceland to Greece. The Broadview Anthology of Medieval Arthurian Literature is ideally suited to teaching: it includes full texts, such as Chrétien de Troyes’ Knight of the Cart, Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s Tale, and the anonymous Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, for classes that wish to study a whole work in depth; it also includes shorter excerpts of parallel incidents, such as the Uther and Igraine story, so that students can compare a story’s treatment by different authors. Marginal glosses assist students with the Middle English texts, while introductory notes and explanatory footnotes give students necessary background information.

Book The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Concise Volume B Second Edition

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Concise Volume B Second Edition written by Joseph Black and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 1791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. The two-volume Broadview Anthology of British Literature: Concise Edition provides an attractive alternative to the full six-volume anthology. Though much more compact, the Concise Edition nevertheless provides instructors with substantial choice, offering both a strong selection of canonical authors and a sampling of lesser-known works. With an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, this edition of the acclaimed Broadview Anthology provides concise yet wide-ranging coverage for British literature survey courses. Sylvia Townsend Warner, Stevie Smith, J.M. Coetzee, Eavan Boland, and Zadie Smith are among those given full author entries for the first time. There are also new selections by a number of authors who were already included in the anthology—among them Seamus Heaney, Margaret Atwood, and Carol Ann Duffy. There are new contextual materials as well—including material on “The Natural, the Supernatural, and the Sublime” in the Age of Romanticism section, and material on “The New Art of Photography” in The Victorian Era. The new edition concludes with a new section offering a range of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction prose under the heading “Literature, Politics, and Cultural Identity in the Late Twentieth- and Early Twenty-first Centuries.” The Concise edition will also now include a substantial website component, providing for much greater flexibility. And an increasing number of works from the full six-volume anthology (or from its website component) are being made available in stand-alone Broadview Anthology of British Literature editions. (Tennyson’s In Memoriam, for example, which was previously included in these pages, will now be available both as part of a stand-alone Broadview Anthology of British Literature edition of Tennyson’s selected poetry and as part of the website component of the anthology’s Concise Edition.)

Book Clwyd Denbighshire and Flintshire

Download or read book Clwyd Denbighshire and Flintshire written by Edward Hubbard and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1986-03-01 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clwyd, covering the former counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire, is exceptionally rewarding in architecture. the medieval period has left a fine legacy, including castles of the time of Edward I as sophisticated as any in Europe, the monastic ruins of Basingwerk and Valle Crucis, and the distinctive local 'double-nave' type of Perpendicular church. Country houses range in size and ambition from Erddig, Kinmel and Chirk Castle to a host of lesser buildings, humbler but still of quality. Towns such as Denbigh and Ruthin, village groups and Victorian seaside resorts all add to the pattern of styles and materials, a pattern further enriched by relics of the Industrial revolution and the striking diversity of vernacular styles.

Book The Penguin Book of English Song

Download or read book The Penguin Book of English Song written by Richard Stokes and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 2277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Penguin Book of English Song anthologizes the work of 100 English poets who have inspired a host of different composers (some English, some not) to write vocal music. Each of the chapters, arranged chronologically from Chaucer to Auden, opens with a precis of the poet's life, work and, often, approach to music. Richard Stokes's notes and commentaries constantly illuminate the language and themes of the poems and their settings in unexpected ways. An awareness of how Ben Jonson based his famous poem 'Drinke to me, onely, with thine eyes' on a Greek original, for example, increases our enjoyment of both the poem and the traditional song; knowledge of Thomas Hardy's relationships with women deepens our appreciation of songs by Ireland, Finzi, Britten and others; Charles Dibdin's 'Tom Bowling', played each year at the Last Night of the Proms, takes on a deeper resonance when we know that it was written after the death of his brother Tom, a sea captain struck by lightning in the Indian Ocean. Many composers of different nationalities appear, but the book remains quintessentially British, and includes pieces that have an established place in our national consciousness: 'Rule, Britannia' (James Thomson), 'Abide with me' (Henry Francis Lyte), 'Auld lang syne' (Robert Burns), 'Jerusalem' (William Blake), 'Once in royal David's city' (Mrs C. F. Alexander), and even 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star' (Jane Taylor). The poems are printed in their original versification and spelling, enabling us to trace the development of the English language as the book progresses. The volume presents a huge amount of information about English Song that will enlighten all those who delight in the fusion of words and music. The presence of minor as well as major poets and the unique principle of selection make The Penguin Book of English Song a highly original anthology of English verse.
