This circumstance renders it important to make distinctions between each kind, and to lay down cer tain rules by which such distinctions can be easily ascertained, according to the particular bone in which the injury may happen to be; for without a correct diagnosis of the fracture be obtained at first, no prin ciple can be acted upon in the treatment, by which the true apposition of the ends of the bone can be obtained, or by which union can be produced, without, in a great number of cases, deformity existing after wards, and causing lameness to the patient for the rest of his life.
