Book Clinical Memoirs on Diseases of Women Classic Reprint

Download or read book Clinical Memoirs on Diseases of Women Classic Reprint written by Alfred H. M'clintock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Memoirs on Diseases of Women The title of this work explains its nature and scope. It is based on clinical observation; aims at clinical utility; and is illustrated by original clinical histories. Whilst my primary object has been to embody some of the fruits of eleven years' experience in the gynecological wards of the Lying-in Hospital, I have, at the same time, been not unmindful of the writings of other authors on this branch of medicine. With the exception of fig. 13, all the pathological illustrations are from original drawings by Mr. Conolly, of cases under my own care. These drawings were done with that fidelity and execution which pre-eminently distinguish the works of this artist: and they were engraved by the skilful and practised hand of Mr. Oldham. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: Including Their Pathology, Causation, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment; A Manual for Students and Practitioners IN the following pages I have attempted to present to the student and junior practitioner such an account of the diseases incidental to women as will prove a reliable, practical clinical guide. Those who, from lack of time or opportunity during their stu dent career, neglected to make themselves familiar with a subject which will form a most important item in the daily routine of ordinary practice, may thus be enabled to repair the omission. My endeavor has been to give an impartial account, and if, in dealing with the subject of displacements of the uterus, too much prominence should appear to have been given to their mechanical treatment, it has been in order that the question should be fairly represented, not that the practitioner is recommended to place too great reliance upon mechanical appliances. The task of condensing within the limits of a manual all that has stood the test of time and experience in this specialty, has been a difficult one. Doubtless many omissions will be found. Still, I trust these may be rectified by encouraging the student to investigate the subject of gynecology more exhaustively in larger works. I have to acknowledge my own indebtedness for much valuable information to Dr. Barnes's Clinical History of the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women, Dr. T. Gaillard Thomas's Fracti cal Treatise on the Diseases of Women, and other similar works duly acknowledged in the text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: Medical and Surgical Gynecology Third: Many cases belonging to the category embraced in this work can be successfully treated, especially in their initial stages, by medical and hygienic measures. I have, therefore, made this feature of therapy conspicuous in the ensuing pages. In doing so. However, I have endeavored to draw a sharp line between what may be classified as medi cal and surgical conditions. There is no more tragic feature of medical practice to-day than is to be found in the deaths caused by a persistent and famous reliance upon medical treatment of conditions that. To the intelligent mind, are obviously amenable only to surgical measures. This kind Of practice often amounts to criminal negligence, the responsibility for which, more than ever before, is being defined in the courts of law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Diseases of Women: Admitting of Surgical Treatment There is no branch of Surgery more open to improvement than that which relates to those accidents and diseases incident to the female sex, which admit of no relief except from the hand of the surgeon. In the standard works on Midwifery and the Diseases of Females, these surgical diseases are for the most part but imper fectly discussed, and their treatment is often described in few words, and without any suggestions to direct the surgeon through the ditfi culties and dangers of the more important operations proposed for their relief. Nor has there yet been published in this country any work specially devoted to the consideration of these difficult, and, for the most part, exceedingly distressing cases.
