Book Ice Storms in the St Lawrence Valley Region

Download or read book Ice Storms in the St Lawrence Valley Region written by Kathleen F. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The severe ice storm in January 1998 in Quebec, eastern Ontario, northern New York, and New England disrupted the lives of millions of people. The ice that accreted on trees and wires damaged electrical transmission and distribution lines, causing power outages that lasted many weeks in some areas. In this report, ice storms in the St. Lawrence Valley region of Quebec, eastern Ontario, and northern New York and Vermont are analyzed, focusing on the amount of ice on power lines. Although there are many photographs of ice-covered wires from this storm, only rough estimates of the equivalent radial thickness of ice on the wires can be obtained from these photos. The analysis in this report relies on historical weather data and ice accretion models to estimate the equivalent ice thickness on wires both in this storm and in past freezing-rain storms. The CRREL and Simple ice accretion models incorporate a physical model of the process of ice accretion with empirically determined parameters. Qualitative information from newspapers, Storm Data, and other reports on damaging storms supplement the model results to provide a better understanding of the climatology of ice storms in the region. Ultimately, all this Information is used to calculate equivalent ice thicknesses from freezing rain for long return periods. For the St. Lawrence Valley region in the vicinity of Montreal, Ice thicknesses on wires 10 m above ground and perpendicular to the for 50 and 200 year return periods are estimated to be 33 mm and 52 mm, respectively. Gust speeds concurrent with these ice thicknesses are about 20 m/s. Ice thickness estimates for the 1998 storm at the three weather stations in the Montreal area range from 48 to 55 mm.

Download or read book Leadership in Disaster written by Raymond Murphy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murphy explores whether technological development inadvertently constructed new vulnerabilities, thereby manufacturing a natural disaster. As the extreme weather in the ice storm may foreshadow what will occur with global warming, Leadership in Disaster also explores the politics, economics, ethics, and cultural predispositions involved in climate change, investigating how modern societies create both the risks they assume are acceptable and the burden of managing them. An innovative comparison with Amish communities, where the same extreme weather had trivial consequences, is instructive for avoiding future socio-economic catastrophes.

Download or read book Plant Disturbance Ecology written by Edward A. Johnson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbance ecology continues to be an active area of research, having undergone advances in many areas in recent years. One emerging direction is the increased coupling of physical and ecological processes, in which disturbances are increasingly traced back to mechanisms that cause the disturbances themselves, such as earth surface processes, mesoscale, and larger meteorological processes, and the ecological effects of interest are increasingly physiological. Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition encourages movement away from the informal, conceptual approach traditionally used in defining natural disturbances and clearly presents how scientists can use a multitude of approaches in plant disturbance ecology. This edition includes nine revised chapters from the first edition, as well new, more comprehensive chapters on fire disturbance and beaver disturbance. Edited by leading experts in the field, Plant Disturbance Ecology, 2nd Edition is an essential resource for scientists interested in understanding plant disturbance and ecological processes. Advances understanding of natural disturbances by combining geophysical and ecological processes Provides a framework for collaboration between geophysical scientists and ecologists studying natural disturbances Includes fully updated research with 5 new chapters and revision of 11 chapters from the first edition

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaim for the first edition: 'The scope of the volume is vast and, overall, the Handbook amounts to an almost encyclopaedic reference text for scholars of environmental questions across the social sciences, be they in sociology, geography, political science or wherever.' – Neil Ward, Environmental Politics 'Each author writes with a distinctive style, yet the work flows well because the editors selected recognized scholars with outstanding credentials. Academic libraries, especially those serving a strong social science community, will find this work a worthwhile addition. Professors of sociology and environmental studies could use the essays for additional readings and reviews.' – Marjorie H. Jones, American Reference Books 'This International Handbook is an important addition to the growing concern and publication in the field of environmental sociology. Certainly any serious scholar in the field should find this edited reference work of interest. . .' – John J. Hartman, International Social Science Review This thoroughly revised Handbook provides an assessment of the scope and content of environmental sociology, and sets out the intellectual and practical challenges posed by the urgent need for policy and action to address accelerating environmental change. More than a decade has passed since the first edition of the Handbook was published to considerable acclaim, and environmental sociology has since become firmly established as a critical social science discipline. This second edition is a major interdisciplinary reference work comprising more than 25 original essays authored by leading scholars, many of whom are intimately involved in national, regional or global environmental policy processes. It marks some of the changes and continuities in the field of environmental sociology, and highlights today's substantive concerns and theoretical debates. The Handbook is divided into three parts covering concepts and theories, critical issues and international perspectives, each with an introduction outlining the content of the constituent chapters and cross-referencing some of the more significant themes that link them together. Authoritative and comprehensive, this Handbook will prove to be essential reading for academics, researchers and students across the social sciences who are interested in the environment. It will also be enthusiastically received by sustainable development policy-makers and practitioners.

This book was released on 2004-06-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought, floods, hurricanes, forest fires, ice storms, blackouts, dwindling fish stocks...what Canadian has not experienced one of these or more, or heard about the “greenhouse” effect, and not wondered what is happening to our climate? Yet most of us have a poor understanding of this extremely important issue, and need better, reliable scientific information. Hard Choices: Climate Change in Canada delivers some hard facts to help us make some of those hard choices. This new collection of essays by leading Canadian scientists, engineers, social scientists, and humanists offers an overview and assessment of climate change and its impacts on Canada from physical, social, technological, economic, political, and ethical / religious perspectives. Interpreting and summarizing the large and complex literatures from each of these disciplines, the book offers a multidisciplinary approach to the challenges we face in Canada. Special attention is given to Canada’s response to the Kyoto Protocol, as well as an assessment of the overall adequacy of Kyoto as a response to the global challenge of climate change. Hard Choices fills a gap in available books which provide readers with reliable information on climate change and its impacts that are specific to Canada. While written for the general reader, it is also well suited for use as an undergraduate text in environmental studies courses.
