Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Fossil Insects in the Secondary Rocks of England: Accompanied by a Particular Account of the Strata in Which They Occur, and of the Circumstances Connected With Their Preservation The intention of this Work is to give some account of the existence of Insects in a fossil state in a more detailed and definite manner than has hitherto been done respecting those which have been discovered in this country; and also to describe in detail the strata in which they are deposited, and the circumstances connected with their preservation. For although a few have been previously observed in other formations in the British Isles, as well as in the Wealden and Lias, still the number is very small, when compared with the great variety of other fossils which those strata afford. Certain beds in the Secondary series are now found to contain the remains of Insects in abundance, so much so, that they may be fairly considered as highly characteristic of those lime-stones in which they occur; and hence a greater degree of interest is attached to such ancient relics of a former world. Perhaps future discoveries may bring to light a much larger collection from other deposits; and it is not improbable that they may lead us to modify some of the opinions already formed, and may even ultimately prove of importance in our conclusions with regard to the physical features and conditions of the ancient Globe. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.
