Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Old Testament History Seeing that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. Thus the fell counsels of the Tempter were accomplished. Through want of faith in God's word, through a longing for independence, through a vain desire to become gods unto themselves, our first parents were beguiled into sin, and when their eyes were opened, instead of greater happiness they now experienced the strange and hither to unknown consciousness of shame, and degradation, and unmeetness for God's presence (gen. Download or read book A Class Book of Biblical History and Geography Classic Reprint written by Henry S. Osborn and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Biblical History and Geography This work is a Class-Book of the Old and the New Testaments treated as consecutive history. It includes the Jewish history of the centuries between the close of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New. It presents those important elements of Biblical history which distinguish it from all other histories and which illustrate the plan and the purpose of the Bible as one Book. Whatever modem scholarship has accomplished to aid in the understanding of the original languages of Scripture in important points has been made use of, and whatever monumental or topographic discoveries would contribute to a better understanding of the geography or archaeology of the text-statements have been introduced where the history required it. The history of the centuries between the close of the Old Testament canon and the beginning of the Christian era includes that of its Jewish literature. Book Old Testament History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Testament History Classic Reprint written by Ismar J. Peritz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History The present treatment of Old Testament history aims to conform to the object of the series as handbooks to Bible study. The Bible itself is, accordingly, the main primary source. In each Section the biblical text, as indicated in the margin, is the basis Of the discussion, and requires the first attention of the student. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History: With Three Maps Hastings' Dictionary of tite Bible. Nevertheless, though I have drawn freely upon the learning of previous writers, I have throughout endeavoured to verify their assertions and to check their inferences, so that the opinions ex pressed have not been formed without independent inquiry and a sense of responsible judgment. Of the many defects of my work, due to limitations partly of space and partly of capacity, I am fully con scious, but its deficiencies will perhaps appear less serious if account be taken of the class of readers whose wants it is meant to supply. It is not intended for scholars, who will find in it little that is unfamiliar except the mistakes, but for less advanced students, who require in a text-book not so much extensive erudition as simplicity of method and perspicuity of statement. If it satisfies in any degree the needs of such, it will have achieved its purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Studies: A Class Book Satan's Temptation - Over against God's word of command and warning, Satan places a false word of persuasion and temptation. Com ing in the form of the serpent which was more subtle than any beast of the field, the Tempter makes insinuation to the woman concerning God's authority and his goodness Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? In simplicity the woman recited the fact that God had given permission to eat all fruit except of the tree in the midst of the gar den, concerning which he had said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. Then the evil one declared that God's word was false, and he boldly asserted that God was' moved not by desire for their welfare, but was envious of his creatures; Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Book Outlines of Old Testament History

Download or read book Outlines of Old Testament History written by Erastus Blakeslee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind. These outlines have been arranged in accordance with this principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of Old Testament History: Outlines and Literature for Private Study and the Class Room We have reached a new era in Bible study. 'old plans and methods of work are giving place to the new. The old material of the Bible has become enriched by the wealth of antiquity. The nations of the Orient are rising from their slumbers.
