One Courtney, a gambler, had had his ears shorn for cheating. Would my lord choose to have refreshment served up while he waited? Did my lord think there would ever be fine weather in England again ? Would lie choose to glance at Mr. Pope's new poem ? here was the volume uncut. But Lincoln was in a fume; his bristles were all erect, and not to be smoothed back by the skilful hand of this officious old comforter. He had been trifled with, that was his first angry impression; then he thought it might be only the peculiar manner of the Duke: for it was one of the mysteries about Newcastle, that people were never certain whether his actions were the result of deliberation, or accident, or imperfect manner.
