Book excerpt: The Cricket on the Hearth is the third in Charles Dickens' series of Christmas classics that started with his beloved A Christmas Carol. In this tale the Peerybingle and Plummer families find themselves at odds with crotchety toymaker Mr. Tackleton, who hates children as much as he hates making toys. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Charles Dickens, With Illustrations: A Christmas Carol; The Chimes; The Cricket on the Hearth; American Notes The narrow space within which it was necessary to confine these Christmas Stories when they were originally published, rendered their construction a matter of some difficulty, and almost necessitated what is peculiar in their machinery. I could not attempt great elaboration of detail, in the working out of character within such limits. My chief purpose was, In a whimsical kind of masque which the good humour of the season justified, to awaken some loving and forbearing thoughts, never out of season in a Christian land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cricket on the Hearth: Fairy Tale of Home The third of Charles Dickens's Christmas Books was, and is, by many considered his best, the introduction of the Cricket being in every way so happy and the various characters so well defined. Gruff and Tackleton, the Peerybingles, Caleb Plummer and his Blind Daughter, Tilly Slowboy - all are in the best Dickensian tradition. The title came through Dickens's predilection for journalism as a profession. He had, in early years of struggle, been a journalist of the mechanical order. Why not, in the days of success, be a journalist of the publicist and really influential type? Hence the idea which ultimately culminated in the foundation of the Daily News was often in his mind, and we find him writing to Forster at the beginning of 1845 suggesting the possibility of a weekly newspaper given over to reviews of books, theatrical criticism, "notices of all good things, notices of all bad ones, 'Carol' philosophy, cheerful views, sharp anatomisation of humbug, jolly good temper...becoming reference in everything to Home and Fireside. And I would call it, sir, 'The Cricket.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kettle began it! Don’t tell me what Mrs. Peerybingle said. I know better. Mrs. Peerybingle may leave it on record to the end of time that she couldn’t say which of them began it; but, I say the kettle did. I ought to know, I hope! The kettle began it, full five minutes by the little waxy-faced Dutch clock in the corner, before the Cricket uttered a chirp. As if the clock hadn’t finished striking, and the convulsive little Haymaker at the top of it, jerking away right and left with a scythe in front of a Moorish Palace, hadn’t mowed down half an acre of imaginary grass before the Cricket joined in at all! Why, I am not naturally positive. Every one knows that. I wouldn’t set my own opinion against the opinion of Mrs. Peerybingle, unless I were quite sure, on any account whatever. Nothing should induce me. But, this is a question of fact. And the fact is, that the kettle began it, at least five minutes before the Cricket gave any sign of being in existence. Contradict me, and I’ll say ten.
