Its central aim is to explore a new method in Buddhist-Christian dialogue that has three steps. First, Buddhists are asked to reflect on biblical texts, second, the texts are analyzed by placing Christian and Buddhist perspectives side by side, and finally points of convergence and difference are established in order to provide a platform for further dialogue. The study succeeds in demonstrating that the method explored is a fruitful approach to interreligious dialogue which takes interpretations of biblical texts by the religious ‘other’ seriously, and manages to both affirm commonalities and face religious difference.

Theravada Buddhism is one of two main branches of Buddhism which was founded by Siddartha Gautama around 560 B.C. Theravada is the strictest branch of the two. Thai Buddhism is a mixture of Theravada, local folklore and superstitions. Thai Buddhism is practiced by ninety-five percent of the population of Thailand. Within Thai Buddhism, men and women participate in the religion differently. Men are given the opportunity to be ordained into the sangha and serve as a monk. Through this path, men are able to achieve nirvana. Women are not given the same opportunity. They must aim to make enough merit so that in their next life they may be born a man. Women may earn merit by: donating to the temple (wat), providing food for the monks, and raising a son who is ordained as a monk. Some scholars believe that Buddhism helps to encourage women into prostitution as they are perceived to be second-class citizens. Buddhism treats women unequally compared to men. In contrast, Christianity offers a better opportunity and outlook for women in life. Christianity offers salvation for all people. Jesus Christ had numerous encounters with women. Women were followers, opened their homes for church gatherings, were prophets, and took on leadership roles among the congregations. The last chapter presents the basis for the ideal Thai Christian woman.

Book excerpt: The research in this dissertation reveals that the testimonies of Northern Thai Buddhist background believers include two themes: relationship as a motivator for religious adherence and tradition. These themes are present in shared descriptions of their former practice as folk Buddhists. These themes are also prominent in their testimonies of how they came to Christ and in their current practices as Christians. Chapter 1 presents the research question and methodology. The research question is "What trends are present in the testimonies of formerly Buddhist Northern Thai Christians?" Methodology includes literature review, interviews, narrative analysis, and grounded theory. Chapter 2 contains a description of historical folk Buddhism and recounts the history of Christian mission in Northern Thailand. This chapter presents the reader with historical instances of many ritual forms that are present in respondents' accounts. Chapter 3 includes respondents' answers to interview questions and organizes them according to two themes: relationship as a motivator for religious adherence and tradition. Their answers provide composite narratives of how respondents left folk Buddhism and became Christians. Chapter 4 includes interaction with themes identified in respondents' accounts and pertinent literature. Chapter 5 is composed of suggestions for ministry and evangelism among Northern Thai folk Buddhists based upon identified themes from respondents' accounts and pertinent literature. Chapter 6 summarizes findings and emphasizes the importance of relationships as motivators for religious adherence. Also highlighted is the prominent place of traditions among Northern Thai folk Buddhists. Concluding chapters discuss the importance of understanding these themes for researching Northern Thai folk Buddhism and for furthering Christian missions in Northern Thailand. This dissertation highlights the need for Northern Thai Christians to form gospel-centered relationships when evangelizing and making disciples among Northern Thai folk Buddhists. Also emphasized are trational elements of the folk Buddhist worldview that act as barriers to Christian evangelism and discipleship in Northern Thailand. Because this dissertation is written from a Christian worldview, suggestions intended to further acceptance of the gospel among Northern Thai folk Buddhists are included.
