Book A Change of Course The Importance to DoD of International Standards for Electronic Commerce

Download or read book A Change of Course The Importance to DoD of International Standards for Electronic Commerce written by RAND CORPORATION, SANTA MONICA, CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is committed to using electronic commerce in the future with the over 300,000 vendors interested in doing business with DoD. Electronic commerce will move DoD from a paper-based world to one based on electronic transactions enabled by the exchange of formatted, electronic messages referred to as electronic data interchange (EDI). With electronic commerce, DoD plans to reduce costs, increase effectiveness, and make it easier for vendors to deal with DoD. Benefits from electronic commerce are enhanced when many businesses use the same standards for EDI messages themselves and their transmission. The fewer standards used, the less time and resources must be spent translating messages and agreeing on how to use different standards. To enhance benefits and smooth the transition to electronic commerce for itself and its vendors, DoD has chosen to use the widely accepted American National Standards Institute (ANSI) X12 standards for EDI messages, coupled with international standards for delivering messages and organizing addresses. In the past 18 months, EDI standards sponsored by a United Nations body and serving the same purpose as ANSI X12 message standards have begun to gain wider acceptance internationally.

Book A Change of Course

Download or read book A Change of Course written by Judith E. Payne and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is now implementing electronic commerce--the use of electronic documents, rather than hard-copy forms--for business transactions. Conducting business in this way requires standard formats that are acceptable both to DOD's vendors and to the hundreds of DOD sites involved. It has chosen the most commonly used standard for such transactions today: the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) X12 standard. This report presents results of a study that examined the special implications to the DOD of the international standards under development to enable electronic commerce. It presents recommendations regarding the use of standards by DOD and DOD's role in standards development.

Book Information Technology Standards

Download or read book Information Technology Standards written by Martin Libicki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines information technology standards and discusses what they are, what they do, how they originate, and how they evolve. While standards are important in improving system interoperability and thereby increasing economic productivity, they are unlikely to achieve their full potential due to a variety of factors, chief of which is the politics of the standard process itself. Libicki points out that the government is not likely the best source for designing and promoting standards. He does an excellent job of breaking down many complex technical issues and presenting them in a fashion that technical people can enjoy and policy makers can understand.

Book Standards Policy for Information Infrastructure

Download or read book Standards Policy for Information Infrastructure written by Brian Kahin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are many competing visions of information infrastructure, there is universal agreement that standards will play a critical role. The history of OSI, the Internet, and industry consortia shows that standards development has become a rich, multifaceted process, critically linked to market strategy and major issues of public policy. The thirty-three contributions to this book present a comprehensive picture of the state of the art in standards development for information technology and the options for federal policy. The book includes both independent analysis and the perspectives of major stakeholders and other interested parties--such as AT&T, the American National Standards Institute, the European Commission, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Book China and Eurasia

Download or read book China and Eurasia written by Mher D Sahakyan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-23 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book facilitates exchanges between scholars and researchers from around the world on China-Eurasia relations. Comparing perspectives and methodologies, it promotes interdisciplinary dialogue on China’s pivot towards Eurasia, the Belt and Road initiative, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Beijing’s cooperation and arguments with India, the EU, Western Balkans and South Caucasus states and the Sino-Russian struggle for multipolarity and multilateralism in Eurasia. It also researches digitalization processes in Eurasia, notably it focuses on China's Silk Road and Digital Agenda of Eurasian Economic Union. Multipolarity without multilateralism is a dangerous mix. Great power competitions will remain. In the Asian regional system more multilateral cushions have to be developed. Scholars from different nations including China, India, Russia, Austria, Armenia, Georgia, United Arab Emirates and Montenegro introduce their own, independent research, making recommendations on the developments in China-Eurasia relations, and demonstrating that through joint discussions it is possible to find ways for cooperation and for ensuring peaceful coexistence. The book will appeal to policymakers and scholars and students in Chinese, Eurasian, International and Oriental Studies.
