In making this historic observation, however, he displayed no very startling powers of prevision, and his reading of the signs of the times might have been endorsed by any contemporary of average intelligence and education. Towards the end of the eighteenth century it must have been quite obvious that Europe had outgrown her institutions and that changes of a radical nature were perforce approaching, although the extreme imminence of the cyclone was perhaps a subject of general miscalculation. She was palpably oppressed by the survival of an obsolete civilization; her organization was still that of the Middle Ages, her society was still impregnated with the ancient principles of Feudalism and Catholicism, and she had not yet discarded practices and conventions which had lost their utility. The result of this suggestion was embodied in The Century Book for Young Americans, the story of the trip Of a party of young people to the city Of Washington, written by Elbridge S. Brooks and richly illustrated from the great store of material which the publishers possessed. The book was issued in the autumn of 1894, indorsed by the National Society, and with an introduction by General Horace Porter, president-general. Its success has been great, both as a book for children at home and for supplemental reading in schools, and in 1896 it was followed by The Century Book of Famous Americans, written also by Mr. Brooks, telling of the adventures Of the same young people and their well-posted uncle on a journey to the homes of historic Americans, Washington, Hamilton, Webster, Clay, Jefferson, Franklin. Lincoln, Grant, and others. It was issued under the auspices of the National Society of the Daughters Of the American Revolution. That history has been too brilliantly written for me to think of writing it afresh. This is a mere essay on the Revolution. The French made, in 1789, the greatest effort that has ever been made by any people to sever their history into two parts, so to speak, and to tear open a gulf between their past and their future. In this design, they took the greatest care to leave every trace of their past condition behind them; they imposed all kinds of restraints upon themselves in order to be different from their ancestry; they omitted nothing which could disguise them. I have always fancied that they were less successful in this enterprise than has been generally believed abroad, or even supposed at home. I have always suspected that they unconsciously retained most of the sentiments, habits, and ideas which the old regime had taught them, and by whose aid they achieved the Revolution; and that, without intending it, they used its ruins as materials for the construction of their new society. Hence it seemed that the proper way of studying the Revolution was to forget, for a time, the France we see before us, and to examine, in its grave, the France that is gone.
