Munus. 1494." This beautiful coin is the work of the painter Francia, and is struck from a die. (2382) No. 424. Bronze Medallion Of Louis XII., King Of France, And His Queen, Anne Of Britanny.--Dated 1499. Diameter, 4 in. (Bernal collection.) Purchased at 1 ll. On the obverse is a bust of the king, on a field powdered with fleurs-de-lys, and around the margin is inscribed, "Felice. Ludovico. Regnante. Duodecimo. Caasare. altero. gaudet. omnis. nacio." On the reverse, the bust of the queen, on a field powdered on the dexter half with ermine, and with fleurs-de-lys as the sinister side. The inscription is as follows: --" Lugdun. re. Publica. gaudete. bis anna. regnante. benigne. sic. fui. conflata. 1499." This fine medallion was executed by order of the magistrates of the city of Lyons, the model in wax being the work of Masters Nicholas and Jehan de Saint Priest, assisted by the goldsmith, Jehan Lepere, who cast it. The medallions were afterwards retouched by the two artists, Saint Priest. One example is said to have been made in gold; one in silver exists in the Bibliotheque Imperiale in Paris, and there are many copies extant in bronze, of which latter the present specimen is the finest known. (2381) No. 425. Medallion Of The Emperior Charles V., in silver gilt.--Dated 1537. German work. Diameter, 2f-in. (Bernal collection.) Purchased at 2U. 10s. On the obverse is the bust of the Emperor in a rich costume, holding an orb and sceptre in his hands, with the legend, "Carolus. V. Dei. gratia....

The Victoria and Albert Museum, or South Kensington Museum as it used to be known, was founded by the British Government in 1852, out of the proceeds from the Great Exhibition of 1851. Like the Exhibition, it aimed to improve the expertise of designers, and the taste of the public, by exposing them to examples of good design from all countries and periods. 2,500 publications have to date been produced by, for, or in association with the V&A. The National Art Library, which is part of the Museum, has prepared this detailed catalogue, supplemented by a secondary list of 500 other books closely related to the V&A. The 1,500 exhibitions and displays recorded include those held in the main Museum and at its branches, the Bethnal Green Museum (now the National Museum of Childhood) and the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, and additionally those it has organized at external venues, in Great Britain and abroad. The exhibitions and publications are fully cross-referenced, and there are name, title and subject indexes to the whole work, as well as an explanatory introduction.
