Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Copeland Collection of 134 Chinese and Japanese ceramic figures, perhaps the most important assemblage of its kind still in private hands, is recognized internationally for the superb quality of its many rare forms. Acquired by Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland over the past fifty years, each of these beautifully modeled human and animal figures testifies to the unerring eye of a premiere collector. The majority of these figures are of porcelain, produced during the late seventeenth to the late eighteenth centuries, principally for export to the West. Each individual piece displays the meticulous artistry, the marvelous enameling, and the animation and wit characteristic of this remarkably innovative period in ceramic history However modest in scale, many are important works of art.--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: This work examines book auctions since the 17th century. The auction has provided a commercial focus for sectors of the book trade for over four centuries. Initiated on the continent of Europe, the practice was adopted in London in the late 17th century, rapidly becoming a primary system for the collecting and dispersal of books. The development in the 19th century of the great London-based auction houses created a new commercial environment in which books and works of art became part of a worldwide cultural agenda. This volume is the 20th in the Publishing Pathways series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of the first edition. Part of the Publishing Pathways Series. The history of private libraries is hard to write. With the books themselves today almost invariably dispersed or absorbed into large institutional collections, they only occasionally achieve coherent visibility. The libraries must be reconstructed using a variety of means, with lists, bookplates, shelf marks, binders' records, owner's markings and contemporary correspondence all playing a part. More often than not the only access we have is through an auction catalogue, appearing like a meteor at the moment of a collection's dissolution; but such catalogues, the by-product of a commercial process rather than a careful record, are often tantalizing and enigmatic in the evidence they offer. This collection of essays by leading specialists in the field, some with extensive auction-house experience, reveals how a variety of collectors at different periods set about amassing their libraries, what they acquired, how they organized, catalogued and displayed them, and the means by which their books came to be dispersed. Illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London and Winchester were not described in the Domesday Book, but the royal properties in Winchester were surveyed for Henry I about 1110 and the whole city was surveyed for Bishop Henry of Blois in 1148. These two surveys survive in a single manuscript, known as the Winton Domesday, andconstitute the earliest and by far the most detailed description of an English or European town of the early Middle Ages. In the period covered Winchester probably achieved the peak of its medieval prosperity. From the reign of Alfred to that of Henry II it was a town of the first rank, initiallycentre of Wessex, then the principal royal city of the Old English state, and finally 'capital' in some sense, but not the largest city, of the Norman Kingdom. In this book a team of scholars from Britain and Sweden, centred on the Wincheste Research Unit have undertaken a full edition, translation, and analyses of the surveys and of the city they depict. Drawing on the evidence derived from archaeological excavation and historical research in the citysince 1961, on personal- and place-name evidence, and on the recent advances in Anglo-Saxon numismatics, they provide an unparalleled account of one of the principal European cities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
