Book Flora of the Vicinity of New York

Download or read book Flora of the Vicinity of New York written by Norman Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Vicinity of New York: A Contribution to Plant Geography This book deals chiefly with the distribution of the flora near New York. Taxonomy and nomenclature are considered only as fundamentals upon which the phytogeographical structure of the book has been reared. This has been done because of the belief that local flora lists and manuals are significant chiefly as they are projectors of ideas rather than mere records of species, be those records ever so accurate. The attempt to explain the origin of the flora centering near the city, and the factors that have played their part in shaping its present composition, has, it seems to the writer, greater value than any enumeration of the species could possibly have. The opportunity for deductive reasoning on the distribution of our flora can be rightly based only on a complete and accurate record of the occurrence of individual species, authenticated by herbarium specimens and reliable field notes. Our knowledge, therefore, is limited by the amount and the availability of such information, and, in the present instance, no one is so conscious of the scarcity of such material as the writer. The book, therefore, is not so much a local flora as a method of writing one, - in some ways it is little more than a record of the incompleteness of our present knowledge. The work was begun at the New York Botanical Garden, in January, 1909, and continued until March, 1911. Since then it has been carried on at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where a division of time between it and increasing administrative duties became necessary. To the directors of both institutions grateful acknowledgement is due for much help and encouragement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial History of the City of New-York, Vol. 4: From Its First Settlement to the Year 1892 Philosophy also, printed privately for his students, First Prin ciples in Chemistry, Outlines in Geology, and Chemistry Applied to the Arts. His three sons achieved distinction in applied science, and the architecture of Grace Church and St. Patrick's Cathedral testifies to the genius of James Renwick, his second son. The second president of the Lyceum was John Torrey, whose name appears among the first list of its ofiicers as a curator. At that time he was a student of medicine, but a fondness for botany led even then to his being accepted as a rising naturalist. He was one of a commit tee that, Shortly after the founding of the Lyceum, prepared a Cata logue of the Plants Growing Spontaneously within Thirty Miles of the City of new-york. Preferring natural science to practice, he ac cepwd, in 1824, an appointment of surgeon in the United States Army, and was promptly made professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geol ogy at the United States Military Academy at West Point. This place he held until 1828. Meanwhile, in 1827, he was called to the chair of Chemistry and Botany in the College of Physicians and Sur geons, which place he then filled until 1855, when he was made emeri tus; also he was professor of chemistry at Princeton from 1830 till 1854, and of chemistry, mineralogy, and botany at the University of the City of new-york in 1822-3. From 1853 till his death, in 1873, he was in charge of the United States Assay Ofiice in this city. In the leisure from his busy work of teaching, he devoted himself assiduously to the pursuit of his favorite science of botany, achieving the titleso justly bestowed on him by his pupil and lifelong friend, Dr. Asa Gray. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the New York Botanical Garden, 1919, Vol. 20 The volume published, dedicated to one of the finest of Colom bia's scholars and statesmen. Michael A. Caro. After a brief geological introduction, divides into three portions. The first part. The therapeutic flora, runs over the vegetation of the country, for the dicotyledons family by family, listing the best known and especially the medicinal species, and making for each some entry of locality and of medicinal use. Often the latter entries are quite full, and while I am little qualified to judge, I should suppose that this is a mine of valuable observations. The monocotyledons and higher cryptogams are not so fully entered, although he has much to say of these. An industrial flora follows on pages 132 to 151, similar in treatment but much briefer. To me in my travels in remote sections of the country the most valuable portion of the book is the third, the index of the common names of the plants used in Colombia. This embraces pages 153 to 275, and is much more than an index. Each entry contains the scientific name of the species, and very generally notes of occurrence and uses. In a country where physicians and medicines are rare and few. The people pay that close attention to the flora which must have characterized the English in the times when our wealth of English names came into being, and so it is but natural to find almost every Colombiano well versed in plant names. To a novice, Cortes' index was indeed a key to the more important part of the flora. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
