Book excerpt: Public universities across the nation have witnessed scores of student-athletes struggling with their ability to achieve academic success. Many student-athletes fail to attain the minimum Grade Point Averages needed to be considered eligible to play sports. The struggle for many student-athletes often begins during their first full semester as university students. At some point during the first semester, nearly half of the student-athletes interviewed for this study found themselves in academic jeopardy. Their academic jeopardy resulted in the University having difficulty retaining this select group of student-athletes. Several factors that impact student-athlete achievement, academic eligibility, and university retention are identified in this study. Through qualitative interviews, this study gave a targeted group of student-athletes the opportunity to identify and explain why they and other students-athletes were able to or not able to maintain their academic eligibility. After being presented with semi-structured interview questions, student-athletes reported on the institutional and personal factors they believed impacted their GPAs. This current research study identified those institutional and personal factors, while simultaneously determining how those factors related to the primary research questions that drove this study.

Many student-athletes face challenges regarding their time commitments and academic success. As student-athletes face more responsibilities, their personal and academic achievement can be affected. This study was guided by two research questions focusing on the resources that influence the academic success of student-athletes, academic support programs currently in place and the correlation between those programs and the academic success of student-athletes at SPORTS University. This research was completed through a mixed-methods, descriptive case study approach, where tools were provided to study a complex phenomenon, theory and interventions were developed based on research findings and results. The research was conducted virtually through a survey and virtual interviews and focused on interactions with student-athletes at SPORTS University. As holds true with case study methodology, the researcher used several data collection methods to ensure that rich data was collected and analyzed. The chosen sources of data collection for this study included structured interviews, surveys, and NCAA artifact review.

Book excerpt: This research explored the major strains that Black male student-athletes experience while attending a Division I Power-Five conference institution and the coping strategies they use to mitigate the strains while being a student and an athlete. Many scholars contend that sports are as important as academics in the lives of students. This is especially true for minorities as many believe sports provide access to academic institutions that might normally be out of reach. As the NCAA now reports that Black student-athletes exceed their White counterparts in most revenue-generating Division-I sports, their graduation rates continue to lag behind. This research used a qualitative case study approach and The Bowman Role Strain and Adaptation Model (BRSAM) as the theoretical framework to explore the strains and coping mechanisms that impact Black male student-athlete persistence. This research identified "time" as the primary strain that is experienced by student-athletes. A lack of time subsequently creates additional strains, which included those related to academics, engagement, and meeting the expectations of their sport. The study also identified athletic student services, family support, religion and spirituality, self-motivation and resilience as coping strategies used by student-athletes to manage stress. This study has implications for increased collaboration between athletics and academics; improvement of campus-wide student counseling and advising; reducing regulations that add mental health pressures to the already unique challenges of the student-athlete experience; and improving persistence and degree attainment for Black male student-athletes.

Book excerpt: The purposes of this study were to examine the effectiveness of tutoring from the Matador Achievement Center (MAC) for student athletes and explore student athletes' identity with athletics and academics. As part of an exploratory sequential mixed-method design, study 1 was completed by using secondary data analysis from the MAC, and study 2 was a case study through interviews. The data from each of these studies are not able to be connected directly, but they provided complementary information to inform future research and program development. For study 1, I hypothesized that student athletes who participated in the MAC would experience positive GPA changes over time and student athletes' GPA would be lower during semesters when their sport(s) was (were) in-season than compared to semesters out-of-season. The archival data included 567 student athletes' records from fall 2013 and spring 2015. The case study had three first year student athletes and they were interviewed about their athletic and academic history. Study 1 indicated that tutoring alone was not enough to increase student athletes' GPA overtime. Study 2 examined how student athletes balanced their roles with athletics and academics as related to identity and agency using a "figured worlds" approach (Holland Lachicotte, Skinner & Cain, 1998). The major findings were that student athletes were not as identified with or committed to their academic development as their athletic development. The student athletes tended to be more motivated with athletics than academics, and they were motivated to play in professional athletics. Lastly, student athletes reported that they experienced disempowerment related to their athletic identity in the classroom when following procedures on the first day of classes. The MAC and faculty liaisons should collaborate to find ways to ensure that the policy serves the necessary functions without putting students in a position of potentially receiving bias. Student athletes seemed that they did not have anything equivalent in academics to a support system they get from athletics.

It can be debated how positive and productive this level of social prominence is; nevertheless, it is noteworthy. Identifying as a student-athlete is a way of distinguishing oneself on a college campus, but what is really the distinctive element of this title? Student-athletes are viewed as peers in the classroom, and perhaps as inferior in some cases. Rather, their social prominence comes from their status as members of university athletic teams. This could be just one of the reasons for imbalance in athletic versus academic identity. The topic of student-athlete academic and athletic identity development has been studied on a limited basis. (e.g., Brewer, Van Raalte, and Linder, 1993, Heird and Steinfeldt, 2013, Marx, Huffman, and Doyle, 2008). Further, studies on the environment of student-athlete academic advising departments and their role in identity development is lacking. The process of college sports evolvement is now over 150 years in the making. Student-athletes have always had to find time for their athletic and academic interests. But does the current climate of college athletics provide an environment in which a student-athlete’s academic and athletic identities may be in conflict, more so than in the past? The aim of this study was to explore an environment of influence on the academic identity develop of college student-athletes.

Book excerpt: The current study explores how academic success is defined and socially constructed between athletic academic support professionals and at-risk student-athletes. There continues to be an increase in academic support services provided to student-athletes, including learning specialists, academic advisors, and academic buildings (Wolverton, 2008). Although a significant relationship between support services and academic output of student-athletes has been found (Hollis, 2002; Ridpath, 2010), the relational and communicative dynamics of these groups have not been fully explored. Using qualitative methods, one-on-one interviews were conducted with participants, and grounded theory and thematic analysis were employed to identify overarching themes for the research questions. Academic advisors identified academic achievement and personal development as academic success. Learning specialists identified academic success as maximizing individual potential. Student-athletes identified meeting grade-based standards and work ethic resulting in reaching personal goals as academic success for themselves. Student-athletes also perceived that their advisor would identify eligibility and effort as academic success, and that their learning specialist would view academic success as building academic skills and work ethic. In addition, overarching themes were found to explain how success is socially constructed among these groups. Academic advisors used communication and instrumental support, while learning specialists created accountability through problem solving and aided in socio-emotional development. Student-athletes identified that their advisor provided information and acted as a safety net, while their learning specialist facilitated academic success and helped them develop socio-emotionally. This study adds to research on the professional roles of learning specialists and advisors, explores at-risk student-athletes' experiences with academic support staff, and identifies how the communication and relational dynamics between these groups may be improved.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Black student-athletes have been criticized for lacking appropriate study and social skills to be successful in a rigorous collegiate environment. At the secondary school level, it is not uncommon for college-bound high performing Black male athletes to lose out on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I scholarship opportunities due to incomplete fulfillment of NCAA Clearinghouse A thru G required college courses and standardized test score requirements. Elevated performances and accomplishments in athletics confirm that Black male student-athletes are fully capable of maintaining high levels of intrinsic and external motivation, exhibited through their willingness to work long hours, commitment, and drive to succeed in athletics. Thus, Black male student-athletes' intrinsic and external zeal for athletics is not commonly mirrored in their academic achievement. Guided by Critical Race Theory framework, this retrospective qualitative study employed 20 open-ended interviews to gain understanding of possible systemic educational barriers "NCAA college-bound" athletes may face at the secondary school level. Findings concluded high school student-athletes possess minimal understanding of NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse academic expectations and/or standardized test requirements. Counselors were named as most common school representative responsible for high school student-athletes' college counseling and academic advisement. Coaches were named as the school representative most trusted for student-athlete academic decisions. Recommendations to implement effective and organized high school student-athlete college preparation programs which should include: (a) organized, mandatory study hall for high school student-athletes, (b) assignment of an academic counselor to specifically work with the student-athlete population, and (c) implementation of mandatory student-athlete bi-weekly progress reports requested by athletic leadership from student-athletes teachers.

In addition, the topic of supporting student-athletes who are academically at risk and/or are diagnosed with high incidence disabilities has been overlooked by scholars resulting in few publications specifically focusing on providing strategies to the staff/personnel who serve these populations. The general target audience is college/university practitioners who interface with student-athletes who demonstrate academic and social risk in the realm of athletics. These stakeholders include but are not limited to: academic support staff, student athletes, parents, coaches, faculty/educators, counselors, psychologists, higher education administrators, student affairs professionals, disability services coordinators/personnel, as well as researchers who focus on education leadership, sports, and special education. All of these groups are likely to find this book attractive especially as they work with student-athletes who are at-risk for academic failure. Also, it is ventured that this book will become the staple text for the National Association of Academic Advisors (N4A), the official organization for all personnel who work in collegiate academic support and can be used by members of intercollegiate athletic associations to reform policies in place to support at-risk student-athletes.

The ramifications of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Proposition 48 are discussed as they have an impact on students at both high school and college level. The legal aspects of "No Pass No Play" policies in Texas and other areas are discussed. Recommendations are made for higher academic requirements for talented student athletes.
