Book excerpt: A Carousel of Sorts is a dizzying leap into the shallow end of the pool of life. The story embraces the enormity of the world and the underlying idiosyncrasies that connect us all in the end. And perhaps along the way, on the wings of the fabled Carik birds from the tale, some of those answers will appear somewhere amidst the infinite spectrum between Bob Dylan’s song lyrics and the ingredients to Cocoa Puffs cereal. Sawyer Redwine, happens upon his own chance at redemption by stumbling into the life of Ashton James during a robbery. They hightail their lives across country in order to create a fresh start careening into Blaiku “Willy” Williams, the final piece in this triangle of fate. From the festive weirdness of a religious carnival located in Iowa to the eccentric values of a cosmetics mogul in Minneapolis, the triumvirate’s journey unfolds under a tabloid, fashion reporter’s eyes. Interwoven in the trio’s new America are an angel who appears to be Ted Nugent, a Mafia hitman trying to become a rodeo clown, an elderly woman who speaks only through Hallmark cards, and an obsessive narrator with a bloated ego and a magically spiked six-pack of beer.

Book excerpt: Missing Trader Intra-Community Fraud (also known as carousel fraud), where goods are repeatedly exported and imported with the EU, has caused a considerable loss of revenue In 2005/6 it is estimated the UK lost between £3-4.5 billion. This report looks both at some of the measure that have been taken to recoup some of this money and measures to stop fraud occurring. In addition it considers whether the Government's policies have imposed an unreasonable burden upon legitimate businesses within affected sectors. It concludes that not only are existing measures unsustainable, steps need to be taken to ensure innocent traders are not damaged. The government needs to work with Member States to implement a system of taxation of intra-Community transactions that will be less vulnerable to major fraud.

Book How to Build an Android

Download or read book How to Build an Android written by David F. Dufty and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stranger-than-fiction story of the ingenious creation and loss of an artificially intelligent android of science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick In late January 2006, a young robotocist on the way to Google headquarters lost an overnight bag on a flight somewhere between Dallas and Las Vegas. In it was a fully functional head of the android replica of Philip K. Dick, cult science-fiction writer and counterculture guru. It has never been recovered. In a story that echoes some of the most paranoid fantasies of a Dick novel, readers get a fascinating inside look at the scientists and technology that made this amazing android possible. The author, who was a fellow researcher at the University of Memphis Institute of Intelligent Systems while the android was being built, introduces readers to the cutting-edge technology in robotics, artificial intelligence, and sculpture that came together in this remarkable machine and captured the imagination of scientists, artists, and science-fiction fans alike. And there are great stories about Dick himself—his inspired yet deeply pessimistic worldview, his bizarre lifestyle, and his enduring creative legacy. In the tradition of popular science classics like Packing for Mars and The Disappearing Spoon, How to Build an Android is entertaining and informative—popular science at its best.

Book Airport Baggage Handling Systems

Download or read book Airport Baggage Handling Systems written by Brahim Rekiek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The competition between airports demands higher-quality services to satisfy passengers. A Baggage Handling System (BHS) serves functions such as baggage sorting, screening, and storage. A successful BHS means bags move between areas as travellers do. Handlers load/unload bags and transfer them between the airport's areas. Automation can save money and bring safety and operational benefits. Warehouses as well as the automotive industry are more advanced technologically in comparison to the airport and especially the baggage handling business. The concept of the Baggage Factory (BF) is an approach (based on Industry 4.0) that simplifies the processes from the moment passengers drop off their bags at check-in till the destination (chutes, carousels, and so forth). Airport Baggage Handling Systems: Using the Baggage Factory Approach to Support AI Optimisation, Decisions, and Design Processes introduces the features of the BF concept and presents how BHS designers can use AI technology to tackle many BHS problems and concerns. The book bridges the gap between airport BHS designers and experts in AI and optimisation. It describes in detail the field of baggage handling using algorithms for sorting bags or optimising the flow. The way the systems are designed is discussed, and a behind-the-scenes look at the BHS industry and how it affects the daily lives of travellers is presented. International and multidisciplinary in approach, this book is an ideal resource for practitioners, students, and researchers involved in the air transportation industry, Tourism, Systems Engineering, Layout and Design, Artificial Intelligence, Assembly Automation, and Logistics fields.
