It reviews the reasons for a New England expedition to capture the fortress, the recruitment of a force of essentially unexperienced militia, the state of the French forces and fortifications at Louisbourg, the various stages of the siege, the effects of the attacker's batteries and the French countermeasures, the relations between the various siege commanders, and the eventual surrender of the fortress. The study ends with a discussion of the possible reasons for the outcome. The appendix contains a chronology, a copy of the Massachusetts governor's scheme for attacking Louisbourg, the governor's instructions to the expedition commander, and terms of the surrender of June 1745.

Book excerpt: Begun in ignorance of the military reality, the War of 1812 was our "most unmilitary war," fought catch-as-catch-can with raw troops, incompetent officers, and appallingly inadequate logistics. American soil was invaded along three frontiers, thte nation's capital was occupied and burned, and the secession of the New England states loomed as a possibility. In Amateurs, to Arms! distinguished military historian Colonel John R. Elting shows how the young republic fought and almost lost its "Second War for Independence," and how it was saved by the handful of amateur soldiers and sailors who survived, masters their deadly new professions, and somehow battled Great Britain to a standstill along our wilderness borders and on the high seas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campaign politics has become increasingly professionalized in recent years. The growing prevalence and influence of paid consultants in the United States and other democracies is one of the most important factors changing the nature of electoral politics. Campaign Warriors thoroughly examines this critical—and controversial—development and its impact on the political system in the U.S. and other countries. The contributors approach the topic from several different perspectives, including the increasing use of "spin doctors" and the resulting loss of influence of state and national political parties. The book investigates the role of these paid advisers: who they are, what they do and why, and how they feel about their work. The contributors discuss the consultant's relationship with candidates and parties, and analyze the effect of their efforts on election outcome.
