Anna teams up with organic farmers and smallholders to learn how to tend sheep, make cheese and honey and grind flour while the Scotsman creates havoc with his friend Pep in an attempt at winemaking, and tries to fathom what's troubling the wriggly inhabitants of his beloved wormery. However, Anna can't quite shake off her old clients from the PR world, and is persuaded by Greedy George to create a media storm for his new Spanish leather store. Book The Bull from the Sea

  • Author : Mary Renault
  • Publisher : Virago

  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book The Bull from the Sea written by Mary Renault and published by Virago. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mary Renault is a shining light to both historical novelists and their readers. She does not pretend the past is like the present, or that the people of ancient Greece were just like us. She shows us their strangeness; discerning, sure-footed, challenging our values, piquing our curiosity, she leads us through an alien landscape that moves and delights us' HILARY MANTEL 'Mary Renault's portraits of the ancient world are fierce, complex and eloquent, infused at every turn with her life-long passion for the Classics. Her characters live vividly both in their own time, and in ours' MADELINE MILLER The sequel to The King Must Die. The Bull from the Sea continues the story of the hero Theseus after his return from Crete. Having freed the city of Athens from the onerous tribute demanded by the ruler of Knossos - the sacrifice of noble youths and maidens to the appetite of the Labyrinth's monster - Theseus has returned home to find his father dead and himself the new king. But his adventures have only just begun: he still must confront the Amazons, capture their queen, Hippolyta, and face the tragic results of Phaedra's jealous rage. Piecing together the fragments of myth and using her deep understanding of the cultures reflected in these legends, Mary Renault has constructed an enthralling narrative of a time when heroes battled monsters and gods strode the earth. 'There's much to say about her interweaving of myth and history and, just as interestingly, there's much to wonder at in the way she fills in the large dark spaces where we know next to nothing about the times she describes . . . an important and wonderful writer . . . she set a course into serious-minded, psychologically intense historical fiction that today seems more important than ever' Sam Jordison, Guardian

Book excerpt: Ocean City, Maryland's own seaside resort, has become so popular that it is almost too small--five square miles--to hold all its tourists. The last few decades have brought tremendous growth to the area in the form of both population and development. Bridges and tunnels have been built, high-rise hotels and condominiums have grown up, and amusements of all kinds have become available to the summertime crowds. In this second volume of Ocean City, images of beach life from the late 1940s to the present day capture the spirit of this popular vacation spot. From funnel cakes to Ferris wheels and deep-sea fishing to seasonal festivals, Ocean City, now a year-round retreat, has offered millions of visitors an endless variety of entertainment. Having survived destruction caused by storms, problems associated with the real estate boom, and the overwhelming surge of visitors who each summer crowd the boardwalk and Coastal Highway, this "small" town has matured over the last few decades into the jewel of Maryland's shore.

This wide-ranging and highly accessible book also shows how ocean adaptations can inspire innovative commercial products—such as fan blades modeled on the flippers of humpback whales—and how future extremes created by human changes to the oceans might push some of these amazing species over the edge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lively and entertaining account of the highs and lows of life on this small windswept island . . . A must read for people interested in Scottish history.” —Scottish Field Lawrence MacEwen’s family has owned Muck, a small island in the Scottish Hebrides, since 1896. A wonderfully benevolent, eccentric character, he is passionate about the island and its continuing success, and has kept diaries all his life. Wildlife writer Polly Pullar paints a portrait of a man and a community, unveiling a uniquely human story punctuated with liberal amounts of humor as well as heart-rending tragedy, always dominated by the vagaries of the sea. Filled with extraordinary tales and priceless observations, this is not only an entertaining read but an important part of Scottish social history. Tracing Lawrence’s story from the time his mother brought him home from the hospital on the mainland up to the present day, it offers tales of coal puffers and livestock transportation on steamers and small boats, extraordinary chance meetings and adventures that eventually led him to finding his wife, Jenny, on the island of Soay. It’s also a book about the small hard-working community of thirty souls on this fertile island of just fifteen hundred acres. Residents work closely with the MacEwen family, in a thriving farm, a market garden, a modern school, a busy tearoom, a craft shop, and a winter shoot. It’s a fascinating journey to a place that opened a guesthouse in 2013—just a few months after Muck, one of the last places in the UK to receive twenty-four hour power, left its unreliable generator behind for solar panels and wind turbines.
