Download or read book Downstream Movement of Lampreys and Fishes in the Carp Lake River Michigan written by Vernon Calvert Applegate and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inclined-screen trap was installed on the Carp Lake River, Emmett County, Michigan, in the spring of 1948 and has been in almost continuous operation since that time. The major goal of this project--a precise determination of the length of the larval life of the sea lamprey--was not attained because of the contamination of the stream above the dam with spawning lampreys. The lampreys and other fishes collected in the trap did, however, provide extensive and valuable biological information. The present report documents much of the information, largely in tabular form, accumulated over the operating seasons, 1948-49 through 1957-58; the amount of detail has been varied according to the importance of the topic under consideration or the amount required to bring out a particular point.

They exhibited signs of irreversible physical degeneration which precedes death. Three specimens were immature at 14, 18, and 26 months in aquariums, thus indicating that under certain conditions, lampreys may extend their parasitic phase.

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History of the Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) In Michigan A recapitulation of the distribution of the sea lamprey as embodied in published reports and summaries of reports (hubbs and Pope, 1937; Shetter, l9n9) is necessary to provide a background for this paper. Additional unpublished records have been added to augment the present known data. Prior to November 8, 1921, when an adult specimen was re covered in Lake Erie, the sea lamprey had been known in the Great Lakes basin only from lake Ontario and its tributaries. In these waters it is apparently native and occurs abundantly in a dwarfed form. Locally it is known as the lake lamprey and is about one half the size of the large sea lamprey of marine habit. These adult lake lampreys probably do not exceed 15 inches in total length. Their destructive attacks upon native food and game fishes were noted at an early date (gage, 1893, 1928; Surface, 1898, 1899; Huntsman, 1917; Dymond, Hart, and Pritchard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Lamprey Spawning Runs in the Great Lakes in 1950 As the result of a special Congressional appropriation (public law 2h9-815t Congress) the Service's sea lamprey investigations were greatly expanded at the beginning of the 1950 calendar year. A per manent staff of seventeen individuals with an equal number of seasonal employees was assigned specifically to these investigations. Permission to occupy the former Hammond Bay Coast Guard Station on northern Lake Huron was obtained from that agency and the nine buildings and other properties involved are now known as the Hammond Bay Fishery Laboratory. Alterations and additions to provide office and laboratory space, rune ning-water aquaria and tank rooms, work shop, net-shop, boathouse, and raceway facilities have been completed or are in progress. Considerable time and energy have been expended to equip this field station and in training the permanent staff.
