The 3rd Field Regiment (The Loyal Company), Royal Canadian Artillery, is Canada’s oldest artillery unit, dating to the founding of the Loyal Company in Saint John in 1793. Since its centennial in 1893, 3rd Field—in various permutations of medium, coastal, and anti-aircraft artillery—has formed the core of New Brunswick’s militia artillery, and it has endured into the twenty-first century as the last remaining artillery unit in the province. In the summer of 1915 he embarked on a journey into war along with his two best friends. It was not just a journey of longitude and latitude, but also a transformation of youth into manhood. The starting point was a place called Paradise. The destination was a place that could be called anything but. The Great War was turning Europe into blood and rubble, and the trio of friends felt called to serve King and Country. The route was perilous and it was not always clear who the enemy was. It was the beautiful game that provided relief and distraction, and more importantly, cohesive teamwork to help the 58th Battalion in their quest to defeat the German foe. The ferocious and bloody battle at Sanctuary Wood was the ultimate test of their courage and skill. "The shelling did take up the whole afternoon, and finally ceased just before sunset. It was terrifying. It was deafening, and by the time it had stopped my nerves were a bloody mess. I thought back to the fireworks at the Canadian National Exhibition. I would never again be inspired by any damn fireworks display. I needed to re calibrate by sense of awe."

Book excerpt: The Royal Winnipeg Rifles regiment holds a special honour - a second official name first bestowed by the enemy: Little Black Devils. The regiment was formed in 1883 and provided members of the Nile Expedition of 1884/5 to rescue Gordon of Khartoum. Its first major operation was the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, seeing action at Fish Creek and Batoche. The regiment was prominent during the First World War, including the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915, when it withstood a poison gas attack and assault that sent units on both sides reeling, leading British Prime Minister Lloyd George to declare that the regiment by steadiness under strain was the focal point in saving the Channel ports and removing the danger to England of invasion. In World War II the regiment was in the spearhead of the Normandy landings and the first Allied unit to reach its D+1 objective. It fought across Northwest Europe into Germany. Since the war it has provided companies for NATO service in Germany and Korea, as well as UN peacekeeping missions.

Those soldiers who survived would spend almost three years in a tiny corner of northeastern France and northwestern Belgium (Flanders), where many of their comrades still lie. And they would serve in many of the most horrific battles of that long, bloody conflict—Saint Eloi, the Somme, Arras, Vimy, Hill 70, Lens, Passchendaele, Amiens, Drocourt-Quéant, Canal du Nord, Cambrai, and Valenciennes. This book tells the story of the 75th Battalion (later the Toronto Scottish Regiment) and the five thousand men who formed it—most from Toronto—from all walks of life. They included professionals, university graduates, white- and blue-collar workers, labourers, and the unemployed, some illiterate. They left a comfortable existence in the prosperous, strongly pro-British provincial capital for life in the trenches of France and Flanders. Tommy Church, mayor of Toronto from 1915 to 1921, sought to include his city’s name in the unit’s name because of the many city officials and local residents who served in it. Three years later Church accepted the 75th’s now heavily emblazoned colours for safekeeping at City Hall from Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Harbottle, who returned with his bloodied but successful survivors.
