Book United States Army 1940 1945 34th Infantry Regiment Volume I

Download or read book United States Army 1940 1945 34th Infantry Regiment Volume I written by Jonathan Ott and published by . This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of the United States Army's 34th Infantry Regiment, from March 1st, 1940, through September 2nd, 1945. The regiment's history is described in a journalistic format, with an emphasis on the 1st Battalion and 'B' Company. Within the 758 pages in Volume I and 710 pages in Volume II (both measuring 8.5 by 11 inches per page), is a compilation of thousands of pages of company clerks' "record of events" narratives for the twenty companies of the regiment. Over five thousand hours were required to research the thousands of pages of company, battalion, and regimental records held in the National Archives in St. Louis, Missouri, and College Park, Maryland. These narratives are the day-by-day, and at times the minute-by-minute actions of the regiment, from initial training starting in July 1940 through Japan's surrender on September 2nd, 1945. In addition to these narratives, personal memoirs of those that served with the regiment are also used. The regiment was reactivated in Camp Jackson, South Carolina, transferred to the Territory of Hawaii, and transferred again to Queensland, Australia; then it engaged in battles in Dutch New Guinea and the Philippine islands. During the five-year period, narratives describe how men were drafted, their basic training, their unit training, new stations, fighting, killing, being killed/wounded, and finally returning home. All of the narratives of the valor citations (Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor) are woven into the narratives. Sprinkled throughout the pages are other event narratives that directly or indirectly affected the regiment. In addition to all of the regimental narratives, the regiment's history before and after World War II can be found in the Prologue and Epilogue sections. Volume II of the two-volume set contains the eight appendices of Volume I. The first appendix contains over 580 pages of documentation: photographs, newspaper articles, maps, 34th Infantry Regiment documents, book excerpts, War Department documents, Naval deck logs, and 24th Infantry Division documents. Appendices two through eight contain the following: (2) United States Army Organization Units, (3) Army Table of Organization and Equipment, (4) 34th Infantry Regiment Commanders, (5) 34th Infantry Regiment Personal Citations, (6) 34th Infantry Regiment Casualties and Enemy Killed, (7) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Wounded and Injured, (8) 34th Infantry Regiment Honor Roll of Dead and Missing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 34th was a large regiment, probably the largest in (its) brigade. It was not so large as some of the others at the first but the great numbers of additions to its ranks, and their zeal in keeping up a large average, always gave them a massive appearance. In their rank and file were some of the foremost men in North Mississippi and many sons of such men. This gave them pride of character, an essential limit of true bravery. In the grand shock of battle... this regiment gave good measure." Reverend E. A. Smith, 1904 Honor Without a Stain: The 34th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, 1862-1865 walks in the footstep of the average North Mississippian from his first engagement at Farmington, Mississippi across the battlefields of Perryville, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Atlanta, and into the grand coronation of death at Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee. Included are never before published wartime diary and letter excerpts. Invaluable to genealogists will be the complete roster of the regiment including last known residences for survivors, circa 1907. "Honor Without a Stain is required reading for every serious student of the War Between the States. The author´s best work yet, Honor Without a Stain is not only a great read, it´s brimming with facts and personal anecdotes available in no other generally accessible publication anywhere. The true story of the Civil War is here. Read it and you will understand." Lt. Cmdr. R. J. Skinner, U.S. Navy (Ret.) "Mr. Boone, I am the great grandson of Thomas Franklin Rutherford mentioned in your book about the 34th of Miss. I have done some research about my kin and the 34th. You have done an excellent job on the material. I, and all three of my brothers, recommend your book highly. Thanks for doing this book for so many people." B. Rutherford Mesquite, TX

Book Red Bull a History of the 34th Infantry Division in World War II

Download or read book Red Bull a History of the 34th Infantry Division in World War II written by Robert Noel Stokes and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the US Army National Guard's 34th Red Bull Infantry Division from mobilization through to their bitter but victorious fight at Hill 609 in Tunisia. The US Army National Guard's 34th 'Red Bull' Infantry Division was mobilized against the complex backdrop of the United States' lack of readiness for modern war before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After training, the 34th ID would be deployed in early 1942 to the United Kingdom as the first US division sent overseas, before participating in Operation TORCH and the capture of Algiers. Shocking engagements with Axis forces led to early traumatic defeats in Tunisia, battles that ultimately transformed the division's men into the killer soldiers they needed to become. Their mettle would be tested when they won the bitter fight at Hill 609, where the Red Bull broke the Axis defensive line in Tunisia, resulting in the destruction of two Axis armies and the Allied conquest of the North African shore. For the first time, almost 80 years after Nazi forces in Italy surrendered to the Allies, the complete story of the US Army National Guard's 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division during WWII is finally told. The Division comes to life through a narrative based on original papers, declassified documents, and personal accounts of the soldiers themselves as they changed from green troops to veteran destroyers of the Third Reich. With constant focus on what happened to the men on the battle line, this book vividly sets forth major battles and little-known events of the Red Bull's brutal introduction to war and its heroic metamorphosis into an effective combat organization, within the context of Allied strategy and leadership.
