Book A Brief History of New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief History of New Jersey Classic Reprint written by Edward S. Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of New Jersey It is the aim of the following pages to make known the most important events in the history of New Jersey, from the first settlement to the present time. With so great an array of authorities at command, the task has been largely that of grouping and condensing the work of others. The question that faced us at the beginning was whether to write merely a brief story that would give a general knowledge of the history of the State, or to add names, dates, and other particulars. In the latter case the work not only would furnish interesting reading, but also would serve for instruction. After consulting with many in whose judgment we have faith, we adopted a middle course. The body of the work aims to inform as well as to entertain; but such statistics as are given appear in the Appendix. If there can be no excellence without labor, then children and adults cannot learn history simply by being entertained with a story which omits the names and dates that are necessary for a comprehension of real history. We consider ourselves fortunate in the help that we have received in our labor. Henry C. Buchanan, State Librarian, John Cotton Dana, of the Newark Free Library, and E. W. Miller, of the Jersey City Free Library, not only placed all the resources of their libraries at our disposal, but also aided us with wise suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Government of New Jersey The Dutch settlers were very slow to take up a residence in New Jersey. By 1664 they had small settlements at Paulus Hook and Bergen (both within the present limits of Jersey City), and also at Hoboken, Pavonia, and Weehawken. A few settlers had built themselves homes on Newark Bay, but the actual settlement had progressed so slowly that when the Dutch were forced to give up New Netherlands, few traces of their occupation remained. Book Geography and History of New Jersey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geography and History of New Jersey Classic Reprint written by Albert B. Meredith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography and History of New Jersey The geography and history of any state are closely interwoven; New Jersey is no exception. Its coast position between two great cities, the long sandy stretches in the east, and the foothills toward the west and north have all combined to make of the history of this state not only an interesting story which every New Jersey school child should know but also one in which he should take great pride. It is the geographic conditions with which a people have to contend that determine to a great extent what that people shall accomplish. The authors of the present book have endeavored to show clearly and definitely the character of the land which we call New Jersey: how it has fostered farming, fishing, and manufacturing; how it has steadily made for progress; and how it has brought wealth to the inhabitants. New Jersey has been greatly favored and her people have accomplished much. The history of New Jersey began almost with the history of our country, and from the time when the first settlers reached her coast and laid out their small farms and towns there have been no movements in our national history in which the men and women of New Jersey have not done their part. It is presupposed that the children who study this book will be acquiring from other texts a general knowledge of United States history, and so only those events and incidents which are peculiarly a part of the history of the state of New Jersey have been included in this narrative. A brief outline of the civics of New Jersey is included which will furnish a framework of government in this state. From such a beginning the child may develop a wider and more thorough knowledge of local governmental problems. Book History of the County of Hudson New Jersey

Download or read book History of the County of Hudson New Jersey written by Charles H. Winfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the County of Hudson, New Jersey: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time In the summer of 1869, white the author was investigating the title to the land now owned by the National Storage Company, near Communipaw, he had occasion to examine some old records. These awakened an interest in the past of this vicinity, which has increased with the subsequent years of research and toil. The following pages are the result. Whatever may be its imperfections, the candid reader may safely credit the author with considerable "work and labor done and performed," as the lawyers say, and an honest endeavor truthfully and impartially to reproduce the past and perpetuate the present, for the pleasure or profit of the future. Not a statement has been made without authority for its justification; not a fact which could throw light upon or add interest to whatever has happened within the County has been omitted, so far as the same came to his knowledge. The records at Albany, Trenton, Hackensack, Amboy and New York, besides many books, papers and private manuscripts, have been consulted. These have been depended on in preference to memories approaching the "forgetfulness of all things." The County was no inconsiderable part of New Netherland, and its history is contemporary and its government one with New Amsterdam. This suggested the starting point for investigation. It has been carried from that point until the present time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Brief History of Chatham

Download or read book Brief History of Chatham written by Charles A. Philhower and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief History of Chatham: Morris County, New Jersey The first thought of compiling this history of Chatham was prompted by the assembling of certain facts concerning the town for use in composing a community drama entitled "Amanda Minton's Dream." After the writing of this play by Mr. H. T. Strong and myself, and the successful rendition of it by "The Chatham Players," I set about to amplify the brief data assembled and to put that which I found in readable form. Urgent requests were made by many of the citizens of the town that the material collected be published. When the History of Morris County was undertaken in 1913 by the Lewis Historical Publishing Co., Mr. Chas. M. Lum was chosen as one of the editorial staff, and it was in response to Mr. Lum's request that this brief sketch was written for that publication. After the manuscript was finally accepted many of the citizens of the town expressed the desire to have the material bound in a separate pamphlet. This was found feasible at a small expense on the publishing side, and in consequence this history of the town is submitted. Grateful acknowledgment is herewith made to all who contributed in any way whatsoever to this work. Especially do I wish to make mention of the materials presented by H. T. Strong, James R. Littlejohn, Wm. H. Lum, Geo. Spencer, Guy Minton, Washington Bond, Nelson Kelley, Sr., and Miss Phoebe Potter. The work done by Mr. James R. Littlejohn in compiling data and making the maps in this pamphlet is of inestimable worth. While individuals might observe omissions and question certain statements, the greatest precaution has been exercised, and wherever it has been thought advisable the source of information has been interpolated in the text. Book Historic Morristown New Jersey

Download or read book Historic Morristown New Jersey written by Andrew M. Sherman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Morristown, New Jersey: The Story of Its First Century A decade and more has elapsed since the author of this volume delivered, before a large Sunday morning congregation, an historical sermon in commemoration of the sixty-fourth anniversary of the dedication of the church edifice in Morris County, New Jersey, in which there worshiped the religious organization of which he was then the regularly installed pastor. The preparation of this sermon, which was subsequently published in pamphlet form, necessitated careful research of township and county annals, which were found to be of rare interest; so far, particularly, as concerned their relation to the seven years struggle for national independence. Later and more thorough research of the annals of the county seat of Morris, the story of which, as the author was impressed, had never been consecutively nor adequately related, fruited in the purpose to attempt, in the not distant future, the writing of a history of Morristown which should aid at least in giving it the prominent place in the annals of our great country to which it is rightfully entitled.
