Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Course in the Calculus The book presupposes some knowledge of Geometry, a working knowledge of Algebra through logarithms, and a thorough knowledge of the elements of Trigonometry. Two introductory chapters on Graphs will supply the stu dent with all he actually needs of Analytic Geometry to read the book, but it is desirable, if possible, that a brief course in Analytic Geometry Should be studied before taking up the study of the Calculus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calculus and Graphs: Simplified for a First Brief Course The importance of the natural sciences is so generally recognized as to need no emphatic statement. Nor is it necessary to point out the dependence of the sciences upon the study and knowledge of mathematics. This dependence is closer and more direct in the case of-calculus than in the case of any other branch of mathematics, unless, perhaps, we except elementary algebra and trigonometry. It is primarily for the purpose of making the elements of the calculus directly and familiarly available to students of physics, chemistry and other sciences that the present book is written. At the same time it is hoped that the book will be found well adapted to the use of those Who wish an ele'i mentary knowledge of calculus for its cultural value. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course in the Differential and Integral Calculus The treatment of the calculus that here follows is based on the courses which I have given in this subject in Harvard Col lege for a number of years and corresponds in its main outlines to the course as given by Professor B. O. Peirce in the early eighties. The introduction of the integral as the limit of a sum at an early stage is due to Professor Byerly, who made this important change more than a dozen years ago. Professor Byerly, moreover, was a pioneer in this country in teaching the calculus by means of problems, his work in this direction dat ing from the seventies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Calculus The usual division of the subject into differential and integral calculus has been largely disregarded. By the arrangement adopted, the student is early led by easy steps into Simple prao tical applications of the calculus; and the more difficult topics are postponed until late in the course. The theory of limits has been used exclusively in the develop ment of fundamental principles. Throughout the book much emphasis is placed upon the applications of the calculus to prao tical problems. Only such knowledge of physics on the part of the student is assumed as is usually included in an elementary course in that subject. Some problems are introduced that Show the use of calculus in discussing well-known applications to physical and engineering phenomena. Such problems are so stated, however, as to require no technical knowledge on the part of the student. The applications to geometry are such as are essential and usually to be found in a first course in calculus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course in Infinitesimal Calculus For learners who can afford but a minimum of time for this study the essential articles of a short course are indicated after the table of contents. The exposition given here Is, In the main, a result of my experience in teaching the calculus to a large number of pupils. Accordingly, it is my duty to acknowledge my indebtedness to many students whose difficulties and original opinions have interested and stimulated me. In preparing the text many works and articles have been consulted. I feel myself to be especially indebted to the writers to whom references are made in various places in the book. Book Elementary Calculus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Calculus Classic Reprint written by Frederick S. Woods and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Calculus The first three chapters form an introductory course in which the fundamental ideas of the calculus are introduced, including derivative, differential, and the definite integral, but the formal work is restricted to that involving only the poly nomial. These chapters alone are well fitted for a short course of about a term. The definition of the derivative is obtained through the concept of speed, using familiar illustrations, and the idea of a derivative as measuring the rate of change of related quantities is emphasized. The slope of a curve is introduced later. This is designed to prevent the student from acquiring the notion that the derivative is fundamentally a geometric concept. For the same reason, problems from mechanics are prominent throughout the book. With Chapter IV a more formal development of the subject begins, and certain portions of analytic geometry are introduced as needed. These include, among other things, the straight line, the conic sections, the cycloid, and polar coordinates. The book contains a large number of well-graded exercises for the student. Drill exercises are placed at the end of most sec tions, and a miscellaneous set of exercises, for review or further work, is found at the end of each chapter except the first. Download or read book Calculus written by Earl W. Swokowski and published by Brooks/Cole Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-06 with total page 1159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Swokowski's text is truly as its name implies: a classic. Groundbreaking in every way when first published, this book is a simple, straightforward, direct calculus text. It's popularity is directly due to its broad use of applications, the easy-to-understand writing style, and the wealth of examples and exercises which reinforce conceptualization of the subject matter. The author wrote this text with three objectives in mind. The first was to make the book more student-oriented by expanding discussions and providing more examples and figures to help clarify concepts. To further aid students, guidelines for solving problems were added in many sections of the text. The second objective was to stress the usefulness of calculus by means of modern applications of derivatives and integrals. The third objective, to make the text as accurate and error-free as possible, was accomplished by a careful examination of the exposition, combined with a thorough checking of each example and exercise.

Book Integral Calculus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Integral Calculus Classic Reprint written by H. B. Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Integral Calculus This text on Integral Calculus completes the course in mathematics begun in the Analytic Geometry and continued in the Differential Calculus. Throughout this course I have endeavored to encourage individual work and to this end have presented the detailed methods and formulas rather as suggestions than as rules necessarily to be followed. The book contains more exercises than are ordinarily needed. As material for review, however, a supplementary list of exercises is placed at the end of the text. The appendix contains a short table of integrals which includes most of the forms occurring in the exercises. Through the courtesy of Prof. R. G. Hudson I have taken a two-page table of natural logarithms from his Engineers' Manual. I am indebted to Professors H. W. Tyler, C. L. E. Moore, and Joseph Lipka for suggestions and assistance in preparing the manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book An Elementary Course in the Integral Calculus Classic Reprint written by Daniel Alexander Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course in the Integral Calculus Many of the examples are original. Others, especially some of those given in the practical applications, by reason of their nature and importance, are common to all elementary courses on calculus. In several instances, examples of particular interest have been drawn from other works. A list of lessons suggested for a Short course of eleven or twelve weeks is given on page viii. This list has been arranged so that four lessons and a review will be a week's work. It is hardly possible to name all the sources from which the writer of an elementary work may have obtained suggestions and ideas. I am especially conscious, however, of my indebted ness to the treatises of De Morgan, Williamson, Edwards, Stegemann and Kiepert, and Lamb. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analytic Geometry and Calculus The increased use of mathematics in science and engineering courses makes it desirable for the student to become acquainted with both the differential and integral calculus as early as possible. When considered as an aid to the study of these allied subjects, the introduction of the calculus cannot well be deferred until a course in analytic geometry has been completed. Fortunately, we have ample experience which shows that there is pedagogical value in a proper combination of the two subjects.
