This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Course in Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Schools and Colleges Qualitative Analysis is that branch of Chemistry which includes all processes by which the constituents of a sub stance are determined. It embraces two fairly distinct Classes of operations, - those in the dry way and those in fire wet way. Analysis in t/ze dry way is dependent upon the deport ment of solid substances at a high temperature, as their fusibility, volatility, oxidizing or reducing power, etc. Aside from its use in determinative mineralogy and assay ing, it is limited to the preliminary examination of sub stances in the systematic course of qualitative analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of a Short Course in Qualitative Chemical Analysis: Arranged for Students in the Colleges of Science of the University of California All vessels used must be kept scrupulously clean; they should invariably be cleansed immediately after using, rinsed once or twice with distilled water and left to drain or dry, not wiped. A Reagent is a body which, by reacting chemically with a substance under examination, indicates its composition or sep arates some of its constituents. General or group reagents separate several bases or acids (groups) at once; special reagents serve to detect individual metals or acids, or to subdivide groups. Many of them act by precipitating insoluble compounds of the substances sought for. It is usual to commence by dissolving the substance to be tested, if solid, as chemical action goes on most readily between substances in solution warming usually facilitates chemical action and hastens the formation and settling of precipitates; many precipitates tend to float on account of entangled gas bubbles or from their fine state of division, but become denser and settle on warming and shaking or stirring. Download or read book A Course in Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by Charles Baskerville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Qualitative Chemical Analysis Detailed methods for the preparation of solutions of definite strength are given for the assistance of the instructor. The value of introducing preliminary experiments in a course in Qualitative Analysis is a mooted question. We believe that they should be restricted to those which are utilized in the schemes of separation. Experience has shown us that it is a good plan to have in the laboratory several sets of bottles con taining solutions of known strength of the salts of the various metals. The students are encouraged to use these to verify any of the preliminary tests in case of doubt. By comparing in special cases the results obtained with known solutions with those obtained with the unknown, a definite knowledge of that particular reaction is fixed in the student's mind. Students should be encouraged to use short cuts, and the use of the preliminary test as a means of indicating short cuts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: A Manual for the Use of Students of Chemistry in Schools and Colleges The purpose of the authors has been to prepare a work on qualitative analysis that shall be both exact and compendious, avoiding on the one hand the diffuseness of the larger treatises and on the other the incompleteness of the smaller manuals. Full statement has been made of the behavior of the bases toward certain reagents, but extraneous details have been omitted. Under the headings Methods of Analysis explicit directions have been given for the separation and detection of the elements, and these directions are followed in every case by a full discussion of the reasons for the different steps and of the difficulties that may arise in the course of analysis. It is hoped that this method of presentation, together with the occasional references to such articles in chemical journals as deal with debated points or new methods, may serve to arouse the interest of the student and to discourage on his part a blind and mechanical style of work that is so common in courses in qualitative analysis and is so greatly to be deplored. The Introduction discusses in considerable detail the principles and operations involved in qualitative analysis, but it does not include the consideration of the dissociation theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for Qualitative Chemical Analysis: With an Introductory Chapter on the Course of Analysis For details of properties, etc., in addition to instruction in the laboratory, the student is constantly referred to some one of the manuals of analytical chemistry placed in the laboratory for this purpose. Whilst these tables seem thus well adapted to a course of college studies, their general popularity, as well as scientific character, is indicated by their extensive adoption in the German universities, and their indorsement by many of the most eminent chemists in this country, and their introduction, in part at least, into many laboratory handbooks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for Qualitative Chemical Analysis In adapting an elementary course of chemical analysis to this purpose the accompanying tables seemed peculiarly suited. Whilst compact, they are sufficiently explicit, and the summary view of the general course of qualitative analysis, and of the classification of compounds according to the properties relied upon for their detection, affords a thread, as it were, around which chemical facts may crystallize as they accumulate. For details of properties, &c., in addition to instruction in the laboratory, the student is constantly referred to some one of the manuals of analytical chemistry placed in the laboratory for this purpose. Book A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by McGregory McGregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum. Book Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint written by Frank Clowes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis The text-book on Qualitative Analysis, written by one of us, has proved by its success that it meets the requirements of large numbers of teachers and students. It furnishes a fairly complete course of work for a student who intends to make a study of Qualitative Analysis. We have long felt, however, that a smaller treatise would be useful to students of elementary practical chemistry and chemical analysis, who have the opportunity of working in a suitably equipped laboratory and under the direction of a teacher. The course of instruction in this book is adapted to those students who do not need so thorough a chemical training as that which must be undertaken by the future professional and analytical chemist. This smaller book is therefore intended for the general students and the technical students of our schools and colleges. Download or read book Hand Book of Qualitative Chemical Analysis written by Robert C. Kedzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand Book of Qualitative Chemical Analysis: Selected and Arranged for the Students of the State Agricultural College of Michigan Many reagents exhibit the same or similar behavior with a group of chemi cally similar elements, and with most of the compounds of these elements; and can therefore be used to divide the elements into groups. Such reagents are called group reagents. Others serve for the further distinction of the several members of such groups, and are termed special reagents. Their selection de pends upon the knowledge of the behavior of such reagents to each single ele ment of the group, or of each of its several compounds. The number of special reagents is much greater than that of the group reagents, their nature being as various as that of the substances which come under examination. Their selection depends on the solubility or insolubility, color, or other physical or chemical properties of the new compounds to which they give rise. Certain special reagents produce reactions which are entirely characteristic of a given substance or compound. Such reagents and reactions are distinguished by be ing printed in small caps. It is the task of the analyst not only to establish that this or that body is present in a compound, but he is to prove that no other body is present beside those which he has actually found. Hence it is evident that he must not treat the substance under examination with reagents indiscriminately. He must fol low a certain fixed order, a methodical system in the application of reagents. This systematic method consists in the employment of group reagents for the successive separation of groups of elements possessing certain common chemi cal properties, and finally, in the recognition of each member in such group by the use of special reagents which are characteristic. The first thing to be done in the Qualitative Analysis of a solid body is to subject it to a preliminary examination in the dry way, whereby important in formation as to its composition may often be obtained. The substance is then dissolved and its constituents determined by analysis in the wet way. The course of Qualitative Analysis therefore embraces three parts. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Course in Qualitative Analysis IT has been the aim in the preparation of this manual to render it as concise as possible with the least sacrifice of a study of reactions and solubilities of chemical im portance. For this reason, many of the reactions found in larger books have been omitted. The following are the points covered in the manual: Preliminary Reactions on Bases and Acids; Schemes of Analysis for Bases and Acids Brief Explanatory Notes on the Analyses; Treatment of Solid Substances (powders, Alloys or Metals); Table of Solubilities of salts of the Bases studied. A comprehensive list of questions on Qualitative Analysis, that will force the student to Mint, Completes the Manual. These questions, together with the explanatory notes on the schemes of analysis, it is hoped will excite the student's interest and prove a source of inspiration as well as an incentive to intelligent work. The book is intended merely as a laboratory guide, and should be supplemented by frequent Quiz Classes and by constant personal attention. The educational value of such instruction cannot be overestimated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Classic Reprint written by Theodore J. Bradley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Qualitative analysis is of use to the pharmacist in testing chemicals for identity and purity. The study of the subject is also Of value because Of the practical knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes acquired by the student, and because it gives training in careful observation and develops the reasoning powers as they are exercised in the interpretation of results. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further.
