Book excerpt: Tom Winter thought the secluded cottage in the Pacific Northwest would be the perfect refuge—a place to nurse the wounds of lost love and happiness. But Tom soon discovers that his safe haven is the portal of a tunnel through time. At one end is the present. At the other end—New York City, 1963. His journey back to the early 1960s seems to offer him the chance to start over in a simpler, safer world. But he finds that the tunnel holds a danger far greater than anything he left behind: a human killing machine escaped from a bleak and brutal future, who will do anything to protect the secret passage that he thought was his alone. To preserve his worlds, past and present, Tom Winter must face the terrors of an unknown world to come. From Robert Charles Wilson, the Hugo Award-winning author of Spin, A Bridge of Years is a classic science fiction story of time-travel and human transformation. • Author : Jerrold Thacker
  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing

Download or read book The Path Less Traveled written by Jerrold Thacker and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since man first began looking at the stars, he’s wondered about their origins and his own. Modern astronomers have explained the beginnings of the universe with the Big Bang Theory, in which all matter erupted from a single explosion billions of years ago. As the universe’s mysteries have deepened, astronomers have introduced an increasing number of concepts which defy understanding, such as an expanding and accelerating universe, galaxies at incredible distances, massive and unexplainable black holes, quasars and bazars with unbelievable distances and energy, dark matter and dark energy which supposedly comprise 96% of the universe but can’t be found, pulsars which defy logic, and many other phenomenon which stretch our imagination. Amateur astronomer Jerrold Thacker calls the Big Bang Theory and its accompanying scientific theories preposterous. Instead, he proposes an alternate explanation for what we observe, based not on the prevailing Doppler Effect and the concept that the universe’s galaxies are receding from our own with increasing velocity but on the “Tired Light” Effect, based on Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, which shows that gravitational fields in outer space slow light, causing a color shift in light produced by distant objects. This new and totally different view of the universe explores the “Tired Light” Effect on what we observe in the universe. The author dismisses much of what is currently espoused by the astronomical community. Instead, he points to Einstein’s predictions and their integral role in explaining every phenomenon hypothesized by modern astronomers, revealing the wonder of the cosmos without a big bang or expanding universe.

Book Buoyancy on the Bayou

Download or read book Buoyancy on the Bayou written by Jill Ann. Harrison and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, shrimp has transformed from a luxury food to a kitchen staple. While shrimp-loving consumers have benefited from the lower cost of shrimp, domestic shrimp fishers have suffered, particularly in Louisiana. Most of the shrimp that we eat today is imported from shrimp farms in China, Vietnam, and Thailand. The flood of imported shrimp has sent dockside prices plummeting, and rising fuel costs have destroyed the profit margin for shrimp fishing as a domestic industry. In Buoyancy on the Bayou, Jill Ann Harrison portrays the struggles that Louisiana shrimp fishers endure to remain afloat in an industry beset by globalization. Her in-depth interviews with more than fifty individuals working in or associated with shrimp fishing in a small town in Louisiana offer a portrait of shrimp fishers' lives just before the BP oil spill in 2010, which helps us better understand what has happened since the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Harrison shows that shrimp fishers go through a careful calculation of noneconomic costs and benefits as they grapple to figure out what their next move will be. Many willingly forgo opportunities in other industries to fulfill what they perceive as their cultural calling. Others reluctantly leave fishing behind for more lucrative work, but they mourn the loss of a livelihood upon which community and family structures are built. In this gripping account of the struggle to survive amid the waves of globalization, Harrison focuses her analysis at the intersection of livelihood, family, and community and casts a bright light upon the cultural importance of the work that we do.
