Book A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie

Download or read book A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie written by James King Newton and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unlike many of his fellows, [James Newton] was knowledgeable, intuitive, and literate; like many of his fellows he was cast into the role of soldier at only eighteen years of age. He was polished enough to write drumhead and firelight letters of fine literary style. It did not take long for this farm boy turned private to discover the grand design of the conflict in which he was engaged, something which many of the officers leading the armies never did discover."--Victor Hicken, Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society "When I wrote to you last I was at Madison with no prospect of leaving very soon, but I got away sooner than I expected to." So wrote James Newton upon leaving Camp Randall for Vicksburg in 1863 with the Fourteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Newton, who had been a rural schoolteacher before he joined the Union army in 1861, wrote to his parents of his experiences at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, on the Red River, in Missouri, at Nashville, at Mobile, and as a prisoner of war. His letters, selected and edited by noted historian Stephen E. Ambrose, reveal Newton as a young man who matured in the war, rising in rank from private to lieutenant. A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie reveals Newton as a young man who grew to maturity through his Civil War experience, rising in rank from private to lieutenant. Writing soberly about the less attractive aspects of army life, Newton's comments on fraternizing with the Rebs, on officers, and on discipline are touched with a sense of humor--"a soldier's best friend," he claimed. He also became sensitive to the importance of political choices. After giving Lincoln the first vote he had ever cast, Newton wrote: "In doing so I felt that I was doing my country as much service as I have ever done on the field of battle."

Book excerpt: The fall of Atlanta and Sherman's March to the Sea were only two end-game events in Charles Willison's service to the 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the American Civil War. In this simple, unvarnished 1908 memoir, Willison tells the tale of one of millions of proud private soldiers. "I never considered myself brave. On the contrary, as a boy was naturally fearful if not a rank coward so that, I am free to confess, I could never face shot and shell with the indifference some claimed for themselves." Yet he remained to the end and did his duty as he saw it needed to be done. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy's Experience in the Civil War: 1860-1865 Free access to the Capitol gave me the opportunity to observe minutely the funeral arrangements for General Thomas J. Jackson. Stonewall Jackson' s remains were brought to Richmond to he in stateinthe Capitol pi epara tory to his funeral. And they arrived late one evening and were first deposited in a little room on the left of the entrance to the Capitol on the side next to the Governor's house. The burial casket was placed onabier, uncovered, and the custodian of the Capitol permitted a favored few including myself to view the remains. The cofiin had ever green heavily intertwined around it. Theic were no flowers. His face was exactly as appears in his photo graphs, except it was thinner, the features were perfectly placid, not evidencing that he had suffered pain, his whiskers and mustache were of unusual thickness, his forehead high and his hair coal black. I brought a small portion of the evergreen on the casket away with me. After lying in state whenhis funeral took place the cortege was preceded by a brass band that played afuneraldirge; the horse that General Jackson rode with General J ack son's boots hanging down one on each side of his saddle came next to the hearse and was led by his body servant. The funeral was impressive as only such a one could be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
