Download or read book A Botanical Survey of the Galapagos Islands Classic Reprint written by Alban Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Botanical Survey of the Galapagos Islands Unfortunately many of the former collectors of plants remained but a short time upon the islands, and as most of them were not botanists, our knowledge of the general botanical conditions has remained rather meager. It was the intention at first to incorporate the entire botani cal results of the expedition in a single paper, but as the present paper has assumed greater proportions than was expected, it seems best to divide the subject and publish the parts separately. The present paper consists of a rather detailed account of the different species of vascular plants, including their range in elevation and their distribution on the different islands; a brief description of the different botani cal regions; an account of the general features of the flora; an account of the factors governing the growth Of vegetation; and an account, so far as possible, of the evidence Offered by the collection concerning the origin of the islands and of the flora. A second paper will deal entirely with a description of the botanical conditions on each island of the group, and short papers will treat of the lichens and mosses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of the Galapagos Islands The bryophytes and thallophytes, as yet known to occur on the Galapagos Islands, are so few that they cannot be supposed in any adequate sense representative of the great groups to which they belong. It has, therefore, seemed best to exclude them from the tabular statistics. It may be remarked, however, that their inclusion would not have significantly altered the numerical relations presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Avifauna of the Galapagos Islands My study reached a point where it became apparent that a satis factory end could not be attained without examining more of the material of former writers, notably the birds collected by Darwin that served Gould as the basis for the first published descriptions of Galapagos Species. Perhaps four-fifths of the types of birds described from the Galapagos are contained in the British Museum, in the Rothschild Museum at Tring, England, and in the United States National Museum, mostly in the first two institutions. In the spring of 1930 it proved possible for me to make the necessary trip, and I visited the British Museum and the Rothschild Museum in the interval between April 27 and June 13, and the United States National Museum on my way home the latter part of June, having abundant Opportunity to examine all of the Galapagos material in those several institutions. Book The Galapagos Tortoises Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Galapagos Tortoises Classic Reprint written by Samuel Garman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Galapagos Tortoises A warm interest of the Museum authorities in the Giant land tortoises has led to the acquisition of so many notable specimens, through liberal exchanges and purchases, as to demand a revision of portions of the collection, especially of that portion directly pertaining to the Galapagos Archipelago. This forms the reason for the following article. It is based mainly on partial specimens, 15. E., carapaces and sternums, but it is thus that these tortoises are most generally known, thus that they are most widely, and most commonly represented in descriptions, figures, and collections. A few attempts have been made at complete characterization of the species by including the anatomical features; these were founded on single specimens, and the individuals of the species are found to differ too much to admit of accurate distinctions unless confirmed by averages secured from repeated dissections, for which much of the material and the labor has yet to be supplied. The Galapagos Islands form an isolated group in the eastern Pacific on the equator about 6° west of Ecuador, or in other words, they are Situated between 89° and 92° of west longitude and between 1° 30' south and 2° north latitude. The largest of them is about eighty miles long and at its widest is about fifty miles wide; from this the sizes vary to some that are mere points of rock or shoals. They are separated from the mainland by more than four hundred miles of deep sea, a thousand fathoms or more in depth. The Wide separation from the continent, their considerable distances from one another, with great differences in altitudes and consequent variations in climate and fertility give them exceptional attractions in the eyes of naturalists. Here if anywhere they might hope to find the species of the flora and fauna distinct from those of the world around them and here it might be possible to trace their development and derivation. Questions of origin go back to the advent of the islands themselves; neither in case of lands, plants, nor animals have the questions been answered with any great degrees of satisfaction. Some authorities have decided that the islands are oceanic, that they never were connected with the continent, but were pushed up from the sea-bottom by the numerous volcanoes they contain. Download or read book The Galapagos Finches Geospizinae written by David Lack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Galapagos Finches (Geospizinae): A Study in Variation Leacock, photographer; and Mr. And Mrs. T. W. J. Taylor, bota nists. The main party arrived at Guayaquil, Ecuador, in late No vember 1938, and reached the Galapagos on December 14, leaving again on April 3, 1939. The writer worked on Chatham Island from arrival until January 29, January 30 was spent on Hood, January 31 to April 2 on Indefatigable, and April 3 on Tower Island. W. H. Thompson worked with the writer on Chatham until January 10, then on Indefatigable from January 11 until the middle of February, when he became ill. Up to the time of his illness, W. H. Thompson shared equally in the field observations on breed ing behavior and ecology, and may therefore be considered equally responsible with the writer for the data upon which Sections II and III are based. The majority of the life histories had been worked out before he became incapacitated. Unfortunately, since my re turn to England after the war started, I have been unable to get in touch with him for writing up these sections. However, I have had a copy of most of his original field notes from which to work. I should like to record here my gratitude to him for his invaluable assistance. I also thank L. S. V. Venables and the other members of the party for their assistance with some of the observations, and help in catching the birds. T. W. J. Taylor is responsible for the botanical identifications in Section III, and some of the habitat photographs. Book Log of the Schooner Academy

Download or read book Log of the Schooner Academy written by Joseph R. Slevin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Log of the Schooner "Academy" On a Voyage of Scientific Research to the Galapagos Islands, 1905-1906 For some time previous to the year 1905 the late Mr. Leverett Mills Loomis, then Director of the Museum of the California Academy of Sciences, had in mind the sending of an expedition to the Galapagos Islands, an archipelago situ ated on the equator 650 miles off the coast of Ecuador, and made famous to every naturalist by Charles Darwin, whose account of the voyage of H. M. S. Beagle has become a classic amongst students of nature. The Galapagos have been visited several times since by naturalists but their stops were all too short and the means at their disposal for carrying on their investigations very limited. It was the idea of Mr. Loomis to send out an expedition that would have ample time to make an exhaustive survey, most extensive collections, and, most of all, to make a thorough study of the status of the gigantic land tortoises and secure specimens of the various species before it proved too late. The result was that an expedition was organized and sent out, remaining in the field for 17 months and one day, and bring ing back the largest and finest collections ever made on the islands. The study of the land tortoises, of which 266 speci mens were collected, resulted in straightening out many diffi cult problems, and, with the exception of Charles Island, showed them to be still living on all of the islands in the archi pelago from which they were formally known and that they even existed on islands they were never before known to be on.
