Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of References on the Biology of Shrimp (Family Penaeidae) The references contained in this bibliography were com piled by the authors in the course of biological studies on com mercially important shrimp, a phase of the work carried on by the Gulf Fishery Investigations, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The references are listed only by authors. Although we recognize the limitations imposed by the lack of subject and taxonomic in dexes, we decided to release the bibliography in this form to make it immediately available to other workers. In order to keep the bibliography within reasonable compass, only those references which contain specific mention of shrimp be longing to the family Penaeidae are included. Because many of the publications were not available to us, some are listed incompletely or possibly erroneously; those we were unable to consult have been marked with an asterisk. No attempt was made to gather refer ences on subjects such as the technological aspects of the shrimp processing industry, palaeontological studies, or shrimp statistics, but a few references in those fields are listed. Shrimp statistics are published annually in the Fishery Statistics of the United States by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Articles dealing with fishing methods and gear have been included because of their general interest to fishery biologists. We hope that any errors or omissions will be brought to our attention. They have now become important commercial shrimp species in many countries in Asia. The main reason behind the importation of P. vannamei to Asia has been the perceived poor performance, slow growth rate and disease susceptibility of the major indigenous cultured shrimp species, P. chinensis in China and P. monodon virtually everywhere else. However, for many reasons, particularly with the evidence of the introduction of exotic viruses to the region, there has been caution on the part of many Asian governments for the introduction of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris. Nevertheless, this caution has not been demonstrated by the private sector, which has been bringing stocks of illegal and often disease carrying P. vannamei into Asia from many locations, as well as moving infected stocks within Asia. The commercial success of these introductions, despite disease problems, has allowed the development of substantial culture industries for these alien penaeids within Asia, particularly in China and Thailand. One effect of this is that it is rapidly becoming difficult to control the importation and development of this new industry. This report attempts to gather all of the currently available data on the extent of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris importation and culture in Asia, its potential problems and benefits, and in this way to serve as a source document from which to investigate further means by which control over this issue might be re-established. Recommendations aimed at controlling the importation, testing and culture of these species have been made for all levels and are included in this report.--Publisher's description.

Within historical times reference is made to prawn in ancient Chinese and Japanese literature. Usage of the term "Prawn‟ and "Shrimp‟ are somewhat confusing. In some western literature the term "Shrimp‟ is applied for Penaeoidea and Sergestoidea, but in the east these are called "Prawn‟. Holthuis discussed the contradiction but did not arrive at any conclusion. In the Prawn Symposium of the Indo-Pacific Fisheries Council held at Tokyo in 1955 it was decided that the word "Prawn‟ should be applied to the Penaeids, Pandalids and Palemonids while "Shrimp‟ to the smaller species belonging to the other families. As such in the present study the term "Prawn‟ is used for all the species belonging to family Penaeidae. Among a variety of edible decapod crustaceans, prawns contribute largely to the fishery wealth of many nations. Exploitation of prawn resource from the seas around each country is playing increasingly significant role in furthering their national economy. In recent years, in spite of some ecological hazards, the demand for prawns and prawn products has increased so much that every country is making efforts to utilize hitherto unknown but usable stocks and expansion of prawn fisheries and industries near coast line is rightly being given the maximum encouragement in the development programme of each nation. After the work of Burkenroad and Kubo, the genus Penaeus has been revised in several times by Tirmizi, Burukovsky and Perez Farfanty & Kensley and classified into six established genera. The chronological history of the development of six genera has been given bellow.
