The Cricket War, now published with a new introduction and afterword, is the definitive account of the split that changed the game on the field and on the screen. In helmets, under lights, with white balls and in coloured clothes, the outlaw armies of Ian Chappell, Tony Greig and Clive Lloyd fought a daily battle of survival. Book A History of Australian Cricket

Download or read book A History of Australian Cricket written by Chris Harte and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 830 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Australian Cricket was first published in 1939, when Australia was just beginning to dominate world cricket for a fourth time. Since then they have proved themselves masters of both the one-day and five-day versions of the game. This book examines the beginnings of the Australian game in the early nineteenth century and demonstrates the influence of English touring teams of the 1860s and 1870s and the coaches they left behind them. They enabled Australia to challenge England on equal terms by 1876-77. Throughout this book, cricket events are richly counter-pointed by background arrangements (and feuds) between the Board and State Associations and the remarkable career of Sir Donald Bradman is chronicled in detail - he was not only the greatest batsman ever but also a superb administrator. Taking in the Bodyline Tour and all others inbetween, this book provides unique insight into Australian cricket history right up to the modern day and amply demonstrates how the Australian Cricket Academy, which opened its doors in 1981, laid the foundations for Australia's current pre-eminence. this is the story of their journey to the top.

But underperforming players have not been his only problem, as the sacking of Australian coach Mickey Arthur just days before the First Test at Trent Bridge created shockwaves in the team. Book A Guide to Crickets of Australia

Download or read book A Guide to Crickets of Australia written by David Rentz and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cricket song is a sound of the Australian bush. Even in cities, the rasping calls signify Australia’s remarkable cricket biodiversity. Crickets are notable for a variety of reasons. When their population booms, some of these species become agricultural pests and destroy crop pastures. Some introduced species are of biosecurity concern. Other crickets are important food sources for native birds, reptiles and mammals, as well as domestic pets. Soon you might even put them in your cake or stir-fry, as there is a rapidly growing industry for cricket products for human consumption. Featuring keys, distribution maps, illustrations and detailed colour photographs from CSIRO’s Australian National Insect Collection, A Guide to Crickets of Australia allows readers to reliably identify all 92 described genera and many species from the Grylloidea (true crickets) and Gryllotalpoidea (mole crickets and ant crickets) superfamilies. Not included are the Raspy Crickets (Gryllacrididae), King Crickets (Anostostomatidae) or the so-called ‘Pygmy Mole Crickets’ (Caelifera), which despite their common names are not related to true crickets. Natural history enthusiasts and professionals will find this an essential guide.

Book The A to Z of Australia

  • Author : James C. Docherty
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press

  • ISBN : 1461671752
  • Pages : 554 pages

Download or read book The A to Z of Australia written by James C. Docherty and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last continent to be claimed by Europeans, Australia began to be settled by the British in 1788 in the form of a jail for its convicts. While British culture has had the largest influence on the country and its presence can be seen everywhere, the British were not Australia's original populace. The first inhabitants of Australia, the Aborigines, are believed to have migrated from Southeast Asia into northern Australia as early as 60,000 years ago. This distinctive blend of vastly different cultures contributed to the ease with which Australia has become one of the world's most successful immigrant nations. The A to Z of Australia relates the history of this unique and beautiful land, which is home to an amazing range of flora and fauna, a climate that ranges from tropical forests to arid deserts, and the largest single collection of coral reefs and islands in the world. Through a detailed chronology, an introduction, appendixes, a bibliography, and cross-referenced dictionary entries on some of the more significant persons, places, and events; institutions and organizations; and political, economic, social, cultural, and religious facets, author James Docherty provides a much needed single volume reference on Australia, from its most unpromising of beginnings as a British jail to the liberal, tolerant, democracy it is today.

Book Over But Not Out

Download or read book Over But Not Out written by Richie Benaud and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a lifetime at the very centre of international cricket, from the most respected TV commentator in the game. Few people understand cricket as well as Richie Benaud. For sixty years, as player and commentator, he has set the standards for others to follow and has witnessed all the major events in the game. No one else has found such favour with the vast numbers of cricket lovers in both Britain and Australia. A high-class attacking batsman and masterful legspin bowler, he captained Australia in 28 of his 63 Tests, regaining the Ashes in 1958-59 and taking part in both Laker's match in 1956 and the Tied Test in 1960. His television career, which began in 1963 while he was still a Test player, has coincided with a period of astonishing change - in the way the game is played, with the increasing popularity of the shorter formats, and in the way it is broadcast, with the innovations that began with World Series Cricket. In Over But Not Out, Richie Benaud has added extensive new material to his acclaimed Anything but . . . an Autobiography in order to cover the years since its publication; he not only revisits his long and remarkable career but also casts his eye over cricket in the 21st century. He gives his distinctive take on series such as the 2005 and 2009 Ashes and contemplates the future of the game he loves, revealing strong and sometimes surprising opinions on Twenty20, day-night games, technology, referral systems, no-balls, neutral umpires and match-fixing. Packed with stories and illuminated by his characteristic incisiveness and independent-minded good sense, Over But Not Out is required reading for all followers of the game.

Book The Penguin History of Australian Cricket

Download or read book The Penguin History of Australian Cricket written by Chris Harte and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian cricket is different. The club with which I played cricket at grade level in Sydney, Central Cumberland, originally the Parramatta club but sometimes known as Cumberland and now again as Parramatta, was a focal point of cricket in the early days of the Colony and I grew up with a love of the written word of cricket history. Like any other Australian youngster living in a country area, I watched matches between adjoining towns and played on antbed or polished concrete pitches then, when moving to Sydney, I played 'Test' matches on dirt pitches in a paddock and on concrete pitches, sometimes with a type of matting over them, in an open park. Rarely though did I play on turf, and this has always been one of the big differences between Australian cricket and English cricket. That need not come as a shock but it should be borne in mind when reading anything connected with the game which has been part of Australian culture for a little less than two hundred years. The emphasis was on rough facilities and cricket played in the early days in a harsh outback. From those areas come some of the greatest cricketers ever to appear at International level, cricketers who followed on from the standards set by W L. Murdoch's team in 1882. It was not a matter of living in the past because I have long held the belief that, as we approach the twenty-first century, the players are every bit as good or better than those who went before them. It is very important though, that occurrences prior to this modern era should be correctly recorded and this should be done in a fashion which the reader will find fulfilling. It is essential in modern times, with the emphasis on television and videotape libraries of history, that the written word should not be discarded. It was time for the history of Australian cricket to be updated and for further research to be done on matters which for many years have been lacking in some detail. A wise choice has been made in asking Chris Harte to do the job because few pay more attention to detail or have the ability to find new aspects of a subject where, at first glance, the facts might appear to have been exhausted. There are many these days who are more interested in matters other than history, but I have always been fascinated by the history of cricket. The story of that first Australian victory in England in 1882 made nerve-tingling reading for me as a youngster, and it hasn't changed these days when again I browse through the Bell's Life account of that wonderful tour. For an Australian team to have pulled off the stunning victory assumes pride of place with me in the whole of Australian cricket history. The prime requirement of a book of this kind is accuracy and Chris Harte is accurate. Another requirement is to probe and he does that well, so well that some of his research has produced new information about various aspects of Australian cricket. No game contains more good or ill fortune than cricket and Mr Harte has had the good fortune to find this new material and we are all in his debt. The saga of Bill McElhone and Ernie Bean is one which has been mentioned in early histories but not in the fascinating detail shown here, and any modem history must include the arrival of World Series Cricket and the changed structure of the game in Australia. Australian cricket has gone through some turbulent times over the period from 1803 to 1993 and Chris Harte has caught my attention by chronicling matters of which previously I had no knowledge. From what is written in the following pages, it seems we should await with great anticipation the details of the finale of World Series Cricket and how the agreement between the Australian Cricket Board and World Series Cricket was signed. That will be no more intriguing than the indication that there were reasons Sir Donald Bradman decided not to renominate for his administrative position i
