Each of the volumes deals with problems in cognitive science from a different perspective, covering the interacting disciplines of cognitive psychology, logic and linguistics, human-computer interaction, neuroscience and artificial intelligence respectively. Linguistics is concerned with the structure and use of languages, and logic with the form and correctness of argumentation in ordinary and scientific language. The two fields are presented with respect to their role in cognitive science and artificial intelligence: How are they realised by psychological mechanisms or biological processes on the one hand or programmed or wired in machines on the other. The contributions in this volume give introductions to the state-of-the-art, emphasizing the analysis of complexity and flexibility in logic and language in the framework of classical approaches (Chapters 3, 4, 5, 7). At the same time some contributions present a broader perspective in which an integration of the formal structure with the structure of the processing systems might be possible (Chapters 2 & 6). Book excerpt: The 7th European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR 2004) was held from August 30 through September 2, at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. ECCBR was born in Aberdeen, UK (2002), after a series of European workshops held in Trento, Italy(2000), Dublin, Ireland(1998), Lausanne, Switzerland (1996), Paris, France (1994), and Kaiserslautern, Germany (1993). ECCBR is the premier international forum for researchers and practitioners of case-based reasoning (CBR) in the years interleaving with the biennial international counterpart ICCBR, whose 5th edition was held in Trondheim, Norway in 2003. The CBR community has shown for years a deep interest in the application of its research to real-world problems. As a result, the first day of both ECCBR and ICCBR has been traditionally dedicated to presenting industrial CBR complications. ECCBR 2004 Industry Day was co-chaired by Mehmet Göker and Francisco Martín who invited professionals from different fields to describe their fielded CBR systems. The second day of the conference was dedicated to four workshops focusing on the following research interests: CBR in health sciences, explanation in CBR, computational creativity, and CBR applied to time series prediction. We are grateful to the Workshop Program co-chairs, Pablo Gervás and Kalyan Moy Gupta, for their efforts in coordinating these workshops, along with the individual workshop chairs and participants. Reason Maintenance ist eine Fortführung und Verallgemeinerung von Truth Maintenance. Truth-Maintenance-Systeme sind Programmsysteme, die Speicher von Aussagen realisieren, die weitgehend nur auf aussagenlogischer Ebene formalisiert sind. Sie verwalten Aussagenmengen und ihre Bewertungen. Annahmen und einfache Konsequenzen aus ihnen werden in einer Weise aufbewahrt, da€ eine widerspruchsfreie Aussagenmenge zu jedem konkreten Zeitpunkt erkennbar ist. Die Technik, mit der dieses Ziel erreicht wird, besteht in der Repräsentation der Beziehungen zwischen den Aussagen und in der Aufbewahrung der Prämissen, Implikationen und Schlu€regeln, die zur Ableitung einer bestimmten Aussage verwendet worden sind. Der Zweck dieser Systeme ist demnach Konsistenzerhaltung durch Begründungsverwaltung. Die vorliegenden Arbeiten repräsentieren den deutschen Wissensstand auf diesem Teilgebiet der Künstlichen Intelligenz unter Betonung des Ansatzes von de Kleer. As the area of CKBS is new, we intended it to be an ideas conference - a conference where interesting new ideas, rather than results from completed projects, are explored, discussed, and debated. The conference was organised by the DAKE Centre. This is an interdisciplinary centre at the University of Keele for research and development in Data and Knowledge Engineering (DAKE). The Centre draws most of its strength from the Department of Computer Science which also provides administrative support for the activities of the Centre, although its membership is spread over several departments. The Centre has three main streams of research activities, namely: Large Knowledge Bases Software Engineering Neural Networks The Large Knowledge Base group, which provided the focus for this conference, is active in a number of research areas relating to data and knowledge bases, spanning from distributed databases to cooperations among data and knowledge bases. The current research topics include integration of data and knowledge bases and coopera ting knowledge based systems, with several major projects in the latter (see the entries under the Poster Session given below).
