Book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers

Download or read book Ashgate Critical Essays on Early English Lexicographers written by Christine Franzen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-Saxon lexicography studies Latin texts and words. The earliest English lexicographers are largely unidentifiable students, teachers, scholars and missionaries. Materials brought from abroad by early teachers were augmented by their teachings and passed on by their students. Lexicographical material deriving from the early Canterbury school remains traceable in glossaries throughout this period, but new material was constantly added. Aldhelm and Ælfric Bata, among others, wrote popular, much studied hermeneutic texts using rare, exotic words, often derived from glossaries, which then contributed to other glossaries. Ælfric of Eynsham is a rare identifiable early English lexicographer, unusual in his lack of interest in hermeneutic vocabulary. The focus is largely on context and the process of creation and intended use of glosses and glossaries. Several articles examine intellectual centres where scholars and texts came together, for example, Theodore and Hadrian in Canterbury; Aldhelm in Malmesbury; Dunstan at Christ Church, Canterbury; Æthelwold in Winchester; King Æthelstan's court; Abingdon; Glastonbury; and Worcester.

Book Wheat and Rice in Disease Prevention and Health

Download or read book Wheat and Rice in Disease Prevention and Health written by Ronald Ross Watson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat and Rice in Disease Prevention and Health reviews the wide range of studies focusing on the health benefits and disease prevention associated with the consumption of wheat and rice, the two most widely consumed whole grains. This book provides researchers, clinicians, and students with a comprehensive, definitive, and up-to-date compendium on the diverse basic and translational aspects of whole grain consumption and its protective effects across human health and disease. It serves as both a resource for current researchers as well as a guide to assist those in related disciplines to enter the realm of whole grain and nutrition research. Overall, studies have shown that a decrease in the amount of whole grains in the modern diet is related to a corresponding increase in health problems that are attributed to this all-too-common dietary imbalance. The resulting health issues associated with an over-processed diet, which provides inadequate levels of nutrients from whole grains, may include obesity, diabetes, high blood lipids, chronic inflammatory states, and an excess of oxidative stress. Strength and endurance may also suffer as a result of these nutrient deficiencies, followed by declines in energy and immunity. Saves researchers and clinicians time in quickly accessing the latest details on a broad range of nutritional and epidemiological issues Provides a common language for nutritionists, nutrition researchers, epidemiologists, and dietitians to discuss how the action of wheat and rice protect against disease and modify human health Preclinical, clinical, and population studies help nutritionists, dieticians, and clinicians map out key areas for research and further clinical recommendations

  • Author : David Kitchen
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-09-29
  • ISBN : 1000933911
  • Pages : 455 pages

Download or read book Global Climate Change written by David Kitchen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth’s climate is changing. This book investigates the scientific, environmental, social, political, and economic aspects of climate change. It enables students to reach an informed opinion and encourages active engagement in finding solutions. It begins with a strong introduction to the scientific factors that drive natural and anthropogenic climate change and expands over three chapters to explore the impact of greenhouse gases on the distribution of solar energy across land, sea, ice, and air. The author examines geologically ancient climates in order to highlight possible future scenarios, and case studies from around the world highlight the impact of climate change on the physical and human environment. The final chapters investigate how society can respond to the challenges of climate change and overcome the political, social, and economic factors that are barriers to progress, focusing on the role of energy policy, fiscal policy, and risk assessment as a means to stimulate discussion about science, society, and the role of the media. Science is the foundation of any solution, but to turn this knowledge into action requires the application of a broad set of skills that are rooted in the liberal arts experience such as critical thinking, analytical thinking, problem solving, and communication. This textbook will be an essential resource for students taking courses in environmental geography, climate change, natural hazards, climatology, and meteorology.

Book How Much Is Clean Air Worth

Download or read book How Much Is Clean Air Worth written by Ari Rabl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Much Is Clean Air Worth? offers readers a comprehensive overview of the core methodologies and tools used to quantify the impacts and damage costs of pollution. The book begins by reviewing the tools used for environmental assessments and shows that a rational approach requires an impact pathway analysis (IPA) for each of the possible impacts of a pollutant, i.e. an analysis of the chain emission -> dispersion -> exposure-response functions -> monetary valuation. The IPA methodology is explained in full and illustrated with worked examples, and difficulties are discussed and uncertainties analysed. In addition to detailed computer models, a very simple model (the 'Uniform World Model') is presented, enabling readers to make estimates for cases where no results are available. Published results for electricity, waste treatment and transport are reviewed, with a thorough discussion of policy implications. This book will appeal to a broad mix of academics, graduate students and practitioners in government and industry working on cost-benefit analysis, environmental impact analysis and environmental policy.

Book Introduction to Geophysics

Download or read book Introduction to Geophysics written by Christoph Clauser and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook on geophysics is a translated and revised editon from its third German edition Einfhrung in die Geophysik - Globale physikalische Felder und Prozesse in der Erde. Explaining the technical terminology, it introduces students and the interested scientific public to the physics of the Earth at an intermediate level. In doing so, it goes far beyond a purely phenomenological description, but systematically explains the physical principles of the processes and fields which affect the entire Earth: Its position in space; its internal structure; its age and that of its rocks; earthquakes and how they are used in exploring Earths structure; its shape, tides, and isostatic equilibrium; Earth's magnetic field, the geodynamo that generates it, and the interaction between the Earth's magnetosphere and the solar wind's plasma flow; the Earth's temperature field and heat transport processes in the core, mantle, and crust of the Earth and their role in driving the geodynamo and plate tectonics. All chapters begin with a brief historical outline describing the development of each branch of geophysics up to the recent past. Selected biographies illustrate the personal and social conditions under which groundbreaking results were achieved. Detailed mathematical derivations facilitate understanding. Exercises with worked-out results allow readers to test the gained understanding. A detailed appendix contains a wealth of useful additional information such as a geological time table, general reference data, conversion factors, the latest values of the natural constants, vector and tensor calculus, and two chapters on the basic equations of hydrodynamics and hydrothermics. The book addresses bachelor and master students of geophysics and general earth science, as well as students of physics, engineering, and environmental sciences with geophysics as a minor subject. The Author Christoph Clauser accepted the professorship for Applied Geophysics at RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany in 2000. There, from 2007 until his retirement in 2018, he held the Chair of Applied Geophysics and Geothermal Energy at the E.ON Energy Research Center. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences - German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He is specialized in geophysical aspects of reservoir engineering, particularly related to geothermal energy, hydrocarbons, and geological carbon dioxide sequestration.
