Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penetrating biographies written by a group of distinguished travel writers, broadcasters, and historians reveal the lives, motives, and passions of forty major explorers in history. It has always been mankind’s gift, or curse, to be inquisitive, and through the ages people have been driven to explore the limits of the worlds known to them—and beyond. Here are the stories of forty of the world’s greatest explorers from Europe, America, Asia, and Australia. These are men and women who changed our perception of the world through their courageous adventures. Organized thematically, the book opens with the oceanic journeys of five hundred years ago, when the great era of recorded exploration began. The following sections look at The Land, Rivers, Polar Ice, Deserts, Life on Earth, and New Frontiers. Many of these explorers recounted their journeys in vivid firsthand accounts; others were superb artists or photographers. The book features quotes from their journals and reports, and it is illustrated with paintings, photographs, engravings, and maps, so that we can experience their adventures through their own eyes and in their own words. Featured explorers include: Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, James Cook, Lewis and Clark, Richard Burton, Samuel de Champlain, David Livingstone, Roald Amundsen, Gertrude Bell, Alexander von Humboldt, Yuri Gagarin, and Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

Book 7 Astronauts who Change the World

Download or read book 7 Astronauts who Change the World written by Monika Koli and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today space travels are marketed as pleasure trips; organizations are even offering a chance to the citizens of the earth to buy their own piece of land on other celestial bodies including the Moon and Mars. Various Space Programs carried out over the years have been able to achieve what was expected of them in terms of better knowledge of the universe, enhancing a nation’s prestige, aiding in military security efforts and other benefits to the human race in general. Private sector profited out from these once unconceivable space adventures. One of the most important of these is using artificial satellites for telecommunications purposes. The beginning of 21st century also heralded the era of commercialized or privately funded space activities; selling space travels as pleasure adventure trip is one of them.

Book The South Pole

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roald Amundsen
  • Publisher : DigiCat
  • Release : 2023-12-16
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 543 pages

Download or read book The South Pole written by Roald Amundsen and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-16 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pole is a book by Roald Amundsen and it represents an interesting first-hand account of the Norwegian expedition's successful attempt to reach the South Pole in 1911. Amundsen spends a great deal of time talking about logistics and placing of depots in preparation for his polar attempt all the way from the preparation leading up to the initial sea voyage, the voyage itself and then the establishing of a camp at the Antarctic. Although they were lucky with the weather, and Amundsen attributed the success of the expedition to "good luck", it is obvious that the Norwegian expedition was well prepared and ready for the troubles ahead; the equipment, the sledges with well-trained dogs, the supply depots with seal meat at regular intervals along the route, the sunglasses to avoid snow blindness; it was all thought of in advance.
