Book excerpt: The existence of an axion is doubly motivated: it solves a fundamental problem of the Standard Model of elementary particles and it is a leading dark matter candidate. The axion was postulated in 1977, shortly after the Standard Model became widely accepted, to explain why the strong interactions are parity invariant. In 1983, it was shown that axions are abundantly produced in the early universe and would appear as dark matter today. Thus, the existence of an axion has interesting implications for cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. Searches for other related hypothetical elementary particles such as axion-like particles, paraphotons and chameleons, are also reviewed.

The motivation to have a celebration honoring Albert Einstein at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale was supplied by Dr. Paul A. Schilpp, the editor of the "Library of Living Philo sophers". Albert Einstein has contributed to this series with his autobiographical notes, a kind of autobiography of his scientific life, in a volume entitled "Einstein: Scientist-Philosopher", the most popular among all the outstanding volumes of this series. Dr. Paul A. Schilpp's presence at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale provided a natural link for an Einstein Celebration as a kind of a continuation of the contribution he made to mankind through the Einstein volume of his "Library of Living Philosophers".

With approximately 120 participants from eleven countries (including, for the first time, the USSR), we found it easy to obtain a selection of papers which was fairly comprehen sive. Indeed, our problem was an embarrassment of riches; in spite of our solemn vows not to crowd the schedule, we ended up with an intense program! By far, the majority of the papers pre sented are represented in this volume. We are indebted to many persons and organizations for their contributions to the Symposia. First, we thank Prof. Per-Olov Lowdin, Director of the Quantum Theory Project and originator of the Sanibel Symposia. This NATO Institute was a conti nuation of aseries of NATO Advanced Study Institutes of Worshops which took place at regular intervals till 1979. This is the first time, however, that charge density wave transport and electronic properties of low dimen sional organic conductors are treated on an equal footing. The program of the Institute was framed by tutorial lectures in the theories and experiments of low dimensional conductors. The bulk of the course covered two series of low-dimensional mate rials with their respective properties. 1) The I-D inorganic conductors exhibiting the phenomena of sliding charge density waves, narrow band noise, memory effects, etc ..• 2) Low-dimensional crystallized organic conductors giving rise to various possibilities of ground states, spin-Peierls, spin density wave, Peierls, superconductivity and magnetic-field induced spin density wave, etc ... Since it has been established from the beginning that this Institute was to be devoted essentially to the Physics of Low Dimensional Conductors, only one main course summarized the progress in chemistry and material preparation.

Many aspects of mixing, dispersing and contacting were related to power draw, but understanding of the phenomena was limited or qualitative at the most. In particular during the last decade, however, plant operation targets have tightened and product specifications have become stricter. The public awareness as to safety and environmental hygiene has increased. The drive towards larger degrees of sustainability in the process industries has urged for lower amounts of solvents and for higher yields and higher selectivities in chemical reactors. All this has resulted in a market pull: the need for more detailed insights in flow phenomena and processes and for better verifiable design and operation methods. Developments in miniaturisation of sensors and circuits as well as in computer technology have rendered leaps possible in computer simulation and animation and in measuring and monitoring techniques. This volume encourages a leap forward in the field of mixing by the current, overwhelming wealth of sophisticated measuring and computational techniques. This leap may be made possible by modern instrumentation, signal and data analysis, field reconstruction algorithms, computational modelling techniques and numerical recipes.
