Book God s Teeth and Other Phenomena

Download or read book God s Teeth and Other Phenomena written by James Kelman and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2020-07-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Proctor, a celebrated older writer and curmudgeon, goes off to residency where he is to be an honored part of teaching and giving public readings, he soon finds the atmosphere of the literary world has changed since his last foray into the public sphere. Unknown to most, unable to work on his own writing, surrounded by a host of odd characters, would-be writers, antagonists, handlers, and members of the elite House of Art and Aesthetics, Proctor finds himself driven to distraction (literally in a very very tiny car). This is a story of a man attempting not to go mad when forced to stop his own writing in order to coach others to write. Proctor’s tour of rural places, pubs, theaters, fancy parties, where he is to be headlining as a "Banker-Prize-Winning-Author" reads like a literary version of Spinal Tap. Uproariously funny, brilliantly philosophical, gorgeously written this is James Kelman at his best.

Book Be My Wolff

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emma Richler
  • Publisher : Anchor
  • Release : 2017-02-14
  • ISBN : 1101946539
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book Be My Wolff written by Emma Richler and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nimble, extraordinarily moving novel about a sister and adopted brother with a one-of-a-kind connection Zachariah and Rachel Wolff are brother and sister. Well, not exactly. They are star-crossed lovers. Well, not exactly. Rachel is the cherished daughter born to a Russian family living in London, and Zachariah is her parents' adopted son, who arrived from the orphanage with one sweater, a head of rambunctious curls, and a dexterous set of fists, or fives, as he likes to call them. As children, they were as close as two people could be. But when they crossed this forbidden line, there was no going back. Now, as an adult, coping with Zach's estrangement from their formidable father, Rachel is determined to invent a family history for her beloved. And so the novel cartwheels through Zach's imagined ancestry--from a tavern-educated boxer in Dickensian times to a Hussar at the Battle of Borodino during the Napoleonic Wars. All the while, Zach and Rachel's troubles in the present are building to a new point of no return. Filled with art and science, fairy tales and folk songs, tsars and foundlings, epic battles in the prize ring and on the Eastern Front, Be My Wolff is a novel of astonishing range and imagination: a love story, an exuberant adventure through time and place, a tale of our most unbreakable bonds.

Book Powerful Patriots

Download or read book Powerful Patriots written by Jessica Chen Weiss and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role do nationalism and popular protest play in China's foreign relations? Chinese authorities permitted anti-American demonstrations in 1999 but repressed them in 2001 during two crises in U.S.-China relations. Anti-Japanese protests were tolerated in 1985, 2005, and 2012 but banned in 1990 and 1996. Protests over Taiwan, the issue of greatest concern to Chinese nationalists, have never been allowed. To explain this variation, Powerful Patriots identifies the diplomatic as well as domestic factors that drive protest management in authoritarian states. Because nationalist protests are costly to repress and may turn against the government, allowing protests demonstrates resolve and makes compromise more costly in diplomatic relations. Repressing protests, by contrast, sends a credible signal of reassurance, facilitating diplomatic flexibility. Powerful Patriots traces China's management of dozens of nationalist protests and their consequences between 1985 and 2012.

Book Crucified Life in a Skinhead Band

Download or read book Crucified Life in a Skinhead Band written by Pete Roper and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retaliator, ' a skinhead band, was formed in the mid 1990's in the run down increasingly dilapidated and violent Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth on England's east coast and set out to tear away the shackles of so-called political correctness that bound the scene so tightly, systematically suffocating it to death, choking off patriotism and passion, slowly killing the fire that had once burned so brightly and fiercely within the hearts of the fans; the very lifeblood of the scene. This book is a first-hand account of the band's long embattled bitter struggle and will take you on a chaotic and often quite ridiculous roller-coaster ride as they diligently fight their way out of the wilderness, or Norfolk as it's often known, into the harsh unforgiving limelight of the murky world of Oi! music.
