Book Introduction to Modernity

Download or read book Introduction to Modernity written by Henri Lefebvre and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962, when Lefebvre was beginning his career as a lecturer in sociology at the University of Strasbourg, it established his position in the vanguard of a movement which was to culminate in the events of May 1968. A classic analysis of the modern world using Marxist dialectic, it is a book which supersedes the conventional divisions between academic disciplines. With dazzling skill, Lefebvre moves from philosophy to sociology, from literature to history, to present a profound analysis of the social, political and cultural forces at work in France and the world in the aftermath of Stalin’s death—an analysis in which the contours of our own “postmodernity” appear with startling clarity.

Download or read book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life written by Erving Goffman and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A notable contribution to our understanding of ourselves. This book explores the realm of human behavior in social situations and the way that we appear to others. Dr. Goffman uses the metaphor of theatrical performance as a framework. Each person in everyday social intercourse presents himself and his activity to others, attempts to guide and cotnrol the impressions they form of him, and employs certain techniques in order to sustain his performance, just as an actor presents a character to an audience. The discussions of these social techniques offered here are based upon detailed research and observation of social customs in many regions.

Book Daily Life in the United States 1940 1959

Download or read book Daily Life in the United States 1940 1959 written by Eugenia Kaledin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine the everyday lives of ordinary Americans from the 1940s and 1950s and discover how very different the two decades were. World War II affected Americans and the way they behaved, not only in the 1940s, but also in the years that followed when the depression that preceded the war was replaced with an economic boom. Explore how women's roles and lives changed during these two very distinct decades, how politics and political decisions impacted all walks of life, and what the advent of growing technology, much of it developed during the war, meant to the general population. What was it like to be a woman suddenly earning her own money while men were off fighting? How did children and teenagers contribute to the war effort? How did housing change in postwar America? What pastimes were popular during these two decades and how did they reflect the times? These questions and others are explored in detail, encouraging students, teachers, and interested readers to recognize the tremendous shift in society between the war years and the atomic age that immediately followed. This text presents the 1940s as a time of social problems that existed alongside community commitment to the war, while the 1950s are presented as a time when exciting social change such as the beginning of the civil rights movement and the building of Levittowns occurred. After the war ordinary people began to question long-accepted ideas. The exploration of these everyday details provides a rich look at two very important decades in our country's history.

This book features 55 topics about life in the years she was growing up there, plus 13 mini-biographies of teachers and neighbors that were important in her life. It is illustrated with over 800 photos of people, places, and events, and even everyday objects most of us no longer use. To assist readers unfamiliar with Manhattan, she has included maps, and to anchor local events to the nation and the world, there is a timeline. The book is thoroughly indexed. Though many dates and events are mentioned, it is not a history of the city, but rather an entertaining account about the way of life in that time and place. Please be aware that this is a 298 page, heavily illustrated book in the same fixed format as the printed book. As such, it is a download of about large download of approximately 227 MB and will take much longer to download than a novel in flowing format that has no illustrations.

Download or read book Supercentenarians written by Heiner Maier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does human mortality after age 110 continue to rise, level off, or start to decline? This book describes a concerted, international research effort undertaken with the goal of establishing a database that allows the best possible description of the mortality trajectory beyond the age of 110. The International Database on Longevity (IDL) is the result of this ongoing effort. The IDL contains exhaustive information on validated cases of supercentenarians (people 110 years and older) and allows unbiased estimates of mortality after age 110. The main finding is remarkable: human mortality after age 110 is flat at a probability of death of 50% per year. The sixteen chapters of this book discuss age validation of exceptional longevity, data on supercentenarians in a series of countries, structure and contents of the IDL, and statistical analysis of human mortality after age 110. Several chapters include short accounts of specific supercentenarians that add life to demographic research.
