Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Greek Sculptors To each of the six Greek sculptors from whom this book takes its title a separate volume might well have been assigned in a series such as the present. But when the editor of the series suggested to me that the great sculptors of Greece should be grouped together, I accepted the suggestion because it seemed that a definite need might thus be met. There are probably many people who wish to acquire some grasp of the character of the chief sculptors, without following the whole course of the history of Greek sculpture from its origins to its decadence; and there are others who desire to supplement what general outlines of this history they may have learnt by a more vivid realisation and appreciation of the work of the leading artists. There is no need to defend the selection of the six sculptors to whom the chapters of the book are devoted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Greek Sculptors It is impossible to acknowledge my obligation to all my predecessors, but I would more especially mention M. Collignon's H istoire de la Sculpture Grecque, to which I have made constant reference, and the various works of Professor Furtwangler, above all his Master pieces of Greek Sculpture. To Mrs. Strong I am in debted for her help in the choice of illustrations, and for the loan of many photographs; also to both authors and publisher for permission to reproduce some details from the magnificent plates of hamdy-bey and Th. Reinach, Une Necropole Royale (3 Sidon. Other publications from which I have borrowed are mentioned in the list of illustrations; I would especially quote among these the Fouilles de Delphes. I must also acknowledge the permission to photograph and repro duce the statue of Heracles in the Lansdowne collection. Book excerpt: More than any other ancient civilization, the Greeks placed the human body at the center of their culture. To them, the sculpted human figure was both an object of sensory delight and an expression of an intelligent mind. In the modern popular imagination, mention of the ancient Greeks is likely to conjure up an image of idealized and naked youth, and it is true that the ideal nude, both male and female, is a striking feature of Greek sculpture. However, in later Greek art, sculptors and their patrons became increasingly interested in human diversity, experimenting with the representation of ethnicity, age, social standing, and character. The marble, bronze, and terra-cotta sculptures presented in this volume--outstanding highlights drawn from over six centuries of artistic production--demonstrate the diversity of Greek figural forms, from the idealized beauty of the Classical era to the individualized portraits of the Hellenistic period. Large, stunning details testify to the artists' skills in portraying cold, hard materials as warm, human flesh.
