Book excerpt: Have you ever felt as if someone else got your life? At 18, Carlotta Wren had her future planned--she would attend college, then marry handsome Peter Ashford, whose family was equally as wealthy as hers, and they would live their lives as members of Atlanta society in relative luxury. But she hadn’t expected her parents to skip town on a white-collar crime charge and leave her no resources to raise her younger brother Wesley. For the past ten years, they’ve scraped by without their fugitive parents, but along the way everyone Carlotta trusted abandoned her, including Peter. Carlotta’s wondered a million times what her life would’ve been like if her parents hadn’t hijacked her future....if things had been allowed to unfold as they should have. And now with a twist of fate, she’s about to find out... If you're looking for laugh-out-loud books, check out the BODY MOVERS series! To-date, titles in the series include: PARTY CRASHERS (prequel) BODY MOVERS 2 BODIES FOR THE PRICE OF 1 3 MEN AND A BODY 4 BODIES AND A FUNERAL 5 BODIES TO DIE FOR 6 KILLER BODIES 6 ½ BODY PARTS (novella) 7 BRIDES FOR 7 BODIES 8 BODIES IS ENOUGH 9 BODIES ROLLING 10 BODIES LYING 11 BODIES MOVING ON 12 BODIES AND A WEDDING Q: Do I have to read the BODY MOVERS books in order? A: It's best to read the first book BODY MOVERS before 2, 3, 4, etc. But PARTY CRASHERS stands alone as a mystery. Carlotta Wren is a secondary character in that book, so you can circle back to read PARTY CRASHERS later (and see Carlotta before she was scared straight!). A note from the author: "This story is 100% human-generated and may contain mistakes, oversights, and a bias toward a happy ending!" --Stephanie Bond

Book excerpt: The bestselling author delves into the twisted crimes of Wayne Adam Ford.“This kind of frightening and fascinating glimpse into a killer’s mind is rare.” —Ron Franscell, New York Times–bestselling author On a chilly November afternoon in 1998, a tearful 36-year-old man walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department in Eureka, California, and confessed to something horrible. “I hurt some people,” he said. Inside his pocket was the ghastly proof of his statement. But there was more to Wayne Adam Ford than the trail of mangled victims he left behind. More, even, than the twisted predator inside, which drove him to increasingly perverse sexual appetites. Pulitzer Prize–nominated author Caitlin Rother draws on previously sealed testimony, interviews with the key players in the case, and the killer’s shocking confession to explore the demons that drove a damaged man to his unspeakable crimes. Her book is a harrowing psychological portrait and a haunting, unforgettable true-life thriller. Includes dramatic photos “Page-turning excitement and blood-curdling terror . . . Riveting, fast-paced, and sure to keep you up at night.” —M. William Phelps, New York Times–bestselling author “Shocking, chilling, fast-paced . . . A book crime aficionados will be loath to put down.” —Simon Read, author of The Iron Sea “Rother has produced a superior study of a serial killer and his lost and lonely victims.” —Carol Anne Davis, author of Couples Who Kill “A must-read . . . Well-written, extremely intense; a book that I could not put down.” —True Crime Book Reviews

  • ISBN : 9780878406616
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Body Parts written by E. Richard Gold and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Body Parts, E. Richard Gold examines whether the body and materials derived from it--such as human organs and DNA--should be thought of as market commodities and subject to property law. Analyzing a series of court decisions concerning property rights, Gold explores whether the language and assumptions of property law can help society determine who has rights to human biological materials. Gold observes that the commercial opportunities unleashed by advances in biotechnology present a challenge to the ways that society has traditionally valued the human body and human health. In a balanced discussion of both commercial and individual perspectives, Gold asserts the need to understand human biological materials within the context of human values, rather than economic interests. This perceptive book will be welcomed by scholars and other professionals engaged in questions regarding bioethics, applied ethics, the philosophy of value, and property and intellectual property rights. Given the international aspects of both intellectual property law and biotechnology, this book will be of interest throughout the world and especially valuable in common-law (most English-speaking) countries.

Book Embodiment via Body Parts

Download or read book Embodiment via Body Parts written by Zouheir A. Maalej and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the “embodiment hypothesis” within cognitive linguistics and beyond is growing steadily aiming to bridge language, culture, and cognition. This volume seeks to address the question regarding what specific roles individual body parts play in the embodied conceptualization of emotions, mental faculties, character traits, cultural values, and so on, in various cultures, as manifested in their respective languages. It brings together some linguistic evidence that sheds light on the embodied nature of human cognition from languages as diverse as Arabic, Chinese, Danish, English, Estonian, German, Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Persian, Spanish, and Turkish. The studies in this volume also show how embodiment is mediated in those languages through such cognitive mechanisms as metonymy and metaphor.

Book Votive Body Parts in Greek and Roman Religion

Download or read book Votive Body Parts in Greek and Roman Religion written by Jessica Hughes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a type of object that was widespread and very popular in classical antiquity - votive offerings in the shape of parts of the human body. It collects examples from four principal areas and time periods: Classical Greece, pre-Roman Italy, Roman Gaul and Roman Asia Minor. It uses a compare-and-contrast methodology to highlight differences between these sets of votives, exploring the implications for our understandings of how beliefs about the body changed across classical antiquity. The book also looks at how far these ancient beliefs overlap with, or differ from, modern ideas about the body and its physical and conceptual boundaries. Central themes of the book include illness and healing, bodily fragmentation, human-animal hybridity, transmission and reception of traditions, and the mechanics of personal transformation in religious rituals.

Book s ibn Al s Book on the Useful Properties of Animal Parts

Download or read book s ibn Al s Book on the Useful Properties of Animal Parts written by Lucia Raggetti and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘Science of properties’ represents a large and fascinating part of Arabic technical literature. The book of ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī (9th cent.) ‘On the useful properties of animal parts’ was the first of such compositions in Arabic. His author was a Syriac physician, disciple of Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq, who worked at the Abbasid court during the floruit of the translation movement. For the composition of his book, as a multilingual scholar, he collected many different antique and late antique sources. The structure of the text itself—a collection of recipes that favoured a fluid transmission—becomes here the key to a new formal analysis that oriented the editorial solutions as well. The ‘Book on the useful properties of animal parts’ is a new tile that the Arabic tradition offers to the larger mosaic representing the transfer of technical knowledge in pre-modern times. This text is an important passage in that process of acquisition and original elaboration of knowledge that characterized the early Abbasid period.
