Book The Young Victoria Classic Histories Series

Download or read book The Young Victoria Classic Histories Series written by Alison Plowden and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-07-31 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I delight in this work', wrote the young Victoria shortly after she became Queen. She was an engaging creature, high-spirited and eager to be 'amused'. But her early years were difficult ones. Fatherless from the age of eight months, she was brought up at Kensington Palace in an atmosphere thick with family feuds, backbiting and jealousy - the focus of conflicting ambitions. Though her uncle William IV was anxious to bring her into Court circles, her German mother and the calculating John Conroy were equally determined that she should remain under their control. The 'little Queen', who succeeded to the throne a month after her eighteenth birthday, was greeted by a unanimous chorus of praise and admiration. She embraced the independence of her position and often forced her will on those around her. She met and married Albert, marking the end of her childhood and the beginning of a glorious legend. Alison Plowden was one of the most successful and popular historians of British history. Her bestselling books include: The House of Tudor, The Young Elizabeth, Lady Jane Grey and Danger to Elizabeth, all of which are available from The History Press.

Book Performing Authorship

Download or read book Performing Authorship written by Sonja Longolius and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors not only create artworks. In the process of creating, they simultaneously bring to life their author personae. Approaching this phenomenon from an interdisciplinary point of view, Sonja Longolius develops a concept of »performative authorship« by examining different strategies of becoming an author. In regard to the notion of her concept, this work offers a critical and comparative analysis of the works of Paul Auster, Candice Breitz, Sophie Calle, and Jonathan Safran Foer. Specifically, Auster/Calle and Breitz/Foer form a generational pair of opposites, enabling a discussion of postmodern and post-postmodern artistic strategies of »performative authorship«.

Book Discrete Series of GLn Over a Finite Field AM 81 Volume 81

Download or read book Discrete Series of GLn Over a Finite Field AM 81 Volume 81 written by George Lusztig and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Professor Lusztig solves an interesting problem by entirely new methods: specifically, the use of cohomology of buildings and related complexes. The book gives an explicit construction of one distinguished member, D(V), of the discrete series of GLn (Fq), where V is the n-dimensional F-vector space on which GLn(Fq) acts. This is a p-adic representation; more precisely D(V) is a free module of rank (q--1) (q2—1)...(qn-1—1) over the ring of Witt vectors WF of F. In Chapter 1 the author studies the homology of partially ordered sets, and proves some vanishing theorems for the homology of some partially ordered sets associated to geometric structures. Chapter 2 is a study of the representation △ of the affine group over a finite field. In Chapter 3 D(V) is defined, and its restriction to parabolic subgroups is determined. In Chapter 4 the author computes the character of D(V), and shows how to obtain other members of the discrete series by applying Galois automorphisms to D(V). Applications are in Chapter 5. As one of the main applications of his study the author gives a precise analysis of a Brauer lifting of the standard representation of GLn(Fq).
