Book Roscoe Hammer

  • ISBN : 1457547880
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Roscoe Hammer written by Dave Gallemore and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, in Mitchell, Missouri, a small town of ornate garden gates, bearded iris and harmless gossip, bad things shouldn’t happen. But too soon and too painfully, eight-year-old Roscoe Hammer learns that they do. His baby sister is stricken with a sudden, life-altering illness and as her condition worsens, his family is overcome with despair. While his mother drifts into depression, his father struggles to fill the void. When Roscoe embarks on a plan to help the family heal, he finds himself in the middle of a series of interconnected mysteries. Who killed Crazy George Mabry’s little dog? Who beat George with a tree branch and left him for dead in Harmony Park? Who — or what — lives in the abandoned shed behind Gertie Paulson’s grocery store? And who shot and killed the town’s bully? Roscoe’s search for the answers — often in the companionship of his best friend, Fatty Gilchrist — is at times frightening, laughable, heart-rending and heart-warming. When all the “facts” are in, when he fears that he alone is in possession of the whole truth, he runs headlong into a lesson that will affect his life forever: There is no such thing as the whole truth and the part of realty we cannot see is often more important than that which we can. Walk the streets of Mitchell, Missouri with Roscoe and his dog Ranger and his friend Fatty, and make their hometown your own. Listen as they try to decide what is right and just and then reflect on your own sense of the same. And then learn again — because you have always known it but have only forgotten — nothing shapes us like the things that happen to us, the people we meet, and the secrets we keep when we are children.

Book The Letters of Thomas Merton and Victor and Carolyn Hammer

Download or read book The Letters of Thomas Merton and Victor and Carolyn Hammer written by F. Douglas Scutchfield and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study affords an entirely new view of the nature of modern popular entertainment. American vaudeville is here regarded as the carefully elaborated ritual serving the different and paradoxical myth of the new urban folk. It demonstrates that the compulsive myth-making faculty in man is not limited to primitive ethnic groups or to serious art, that vaudeville cannot be dismissed as meaningless and irrelevant simply because it fits neither the criteria of formal criticsm or the familiar patterns of anthropological study. Using the methods for criticism developed by Susanne K. Langer and others, the author evaluates American vaudeville as a symbolic manifestation of basic values shared by the American people during the period 1885-1930. By examining vaudeville as folk ritual, the book reveals the unconscious symbolism basic to vaudeville-in its humor, magic, animal acts, music, and playlets, and also in the performers and the managers -- which gave form to the dominant American myth of success. This striking view of the new mass man as a folk and of his mythology rooted in the very empirical science devoted to dispelling myth has implications for the serious study of all forms of mass entertainment in America. The book is illustrated with a number of striking photographs.

Book Hammer Is a Word

Download or read book Hammer Is a Word written by Perry Stuart Gordon Anderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late one evening in the fall of 2005, just twenty minutes outside of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, a thirty-seven-year-old man takes a break from Coldplay to go outside his trailer on a farmer's field only to find out he is not alone. There was something floating a mere hundred feet or so just above him. It was the classic case of alien visitation, only there was nothing to suggest it was actually alien . . . just alien to him. Indeed it looked more like an Area 51 project gone astray. There were two of them, both identical and jet-black except for lights, extremely stealthy looking and totally silent. It wouldn't be the last time Mr. Anderson would come face-to-face with the paranormal. Something about their behavior seemed to be telling him that it was just "somebody's mistake" and to just go back inside the house and forget he had seen anything . . . trouble was . . . he didn't forget! He starts to wonder about his French speaking skills. Next morning he awoke to Sarah McLachlan's rendition of Black Bird.

Mark fronts a band that seems to get bigger with each successive show, he writes a column in an independent weekly, and spends his days as part of the Scene, where beer and good people are never in short supply. This is the destination Mark has aimed for, the place all velocity and trejectory have deposited him. But why then does he wake up every day feeling worse than the day before? As the summer rolls relentlessly on, his band, his friends, the hanging-out, all seem increasingly bleak and stale until Mark reaches for the one thing that will set it all right, or ruin everything completely. Book Mickey Spillane on Screen

Download or read book Mickey Spillane on Screen written by Max Allan Collins and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-20th century, Mickey Spillane was the sensation of not just mystery fiction but publishing itself. The level of sex and violence in his Mike Hammer thrillers (starting with I, the Jury in 1947) broke down long-held taboos and engendered a near hysterical critical backlash. Nonetheless, Spillane's influence has been felt--reflections of Hammer are visible in nearly every subsequent tough guy of fiction and film, including James Bond, Dirty Harry, Shaft, Billy Jack, and Jack Bauer. Spillane's fiction came to the screen in a series of films that include Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and The Girl Hunters (1963) with the author himself playing his private eye. These films, and television series starring Darren McGavin and Stacy Keach respectively, are examined in a lively, knowledgeable fashion by Spillane experts. Included are cast and crew listings, brief biographical entries on key persons, and a lengthy interview with Spillane.
