Download or read book Deathbird Stories written by Harlan Ellison and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masterpieces of myth and terror about modern gods from technology to drugs to materialismââfantasy at its most bizarre and unsettlingâ (The New York Times). As Earth approaches Armageddon, a man embarks on a quest to confront God in the Hugo Awardâwinning novelette, âThe Deathbird.â In New York City, a brutal act of violence summons a malevolent spirit and a growing congregation of desensitized worshippers in âThe Whimper of Whipped Dogs,â an Edgar Award winner influenced by the real-life murder of Queens resident Kitty Genovese in 1964. In âPaingod,â the deity tasked with inflicting pain and suffering on every living being in the universe questions the purpose of its cruel existence. Deathbird Stories collects these and sixteen more provocative tales exploring the futility of faith in a faithless world. A legendary author of speculative fiction whose best-known works include A Boy and His Dog and I Have No Mouth, and I Must Screamâand whose major awards and nominations number in the dozens, Harlan Ellison strips away convention and hypocrisy and lays bare the human condition in modern society as ancient gods fade and new deities rise to appease the massesâgods of technology, drugs, gambling, materialismâthat are as insubstantial as the beliefs of those who venerate them. In addition to his Nebula, Hugo, World Fantasy, Bram Stoker, Edgar, and other awards, Ellison was called âone of the great living American short story writersâ by the Washington Postâand this collection makes it clear why he has earned such an extraordinary assortment of accolades. Stories include: âIntroduction: Oblations at Alien Altarsâ âThe Whimper of Whipped Dogsâ âAlong the Scenic Routeâ âOn the Downhill Sideâ âO Ye of Little Faithâ âNeonâ âBasiliskâ âPretty Maggie Moneyeyesâ âCorpseâ âShattered Like a Glass Goblinâ âDelusion for a Dragon Slayerâ âThe Face of Helene Bournouwâ âBleeding Stonesâ âAt the Mouse Circusâ âThe Place with No Nameâ âPaingodâ âErnest and the Machine Godâ âRock Godâ âAdrift Just Off the Islets of Langerhans: Latitude 38° 54' N, Longitude 77° 00' 13" Wâ âThe Deathbirdâ

Download or read book The 71F Advantage written by National Defense University Press and published by NDU Press. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes a foreword by Major General David A. Rubenstein. From the editor: "71F, or "71 Foxtrot," is the AOC (area of concentration) code assigned by the U.S. Army to the specialty of Research Psychology. Qualifying as an Army research psychologist requires, first of all, a Ph.D. from a research (not clinical) intensive graduate psychology program. Due to their advanced education, research psychologists receive a direct commission as Army officers in the Medical Service Corps at the rank of captain. In terms of numbers, the 71F AOC is a small one, with only 25 to 30 officers serving in any given year. However, the 71F impact is much bigger than this small cadre suggests. Army research psychologists apply their extensive training and expertise in the science of psychology and social behavior toward understanding, preserving, and enhancing the health, well being, morale, and performance of Soldiers and military families. As is clear throughout the pages of this book, they do this in many ways and in many areas, but always with a scientific approach. This is the 71F advantage: applying the science of psychology to understand the human dimension, and developing programs, policies, and products to benefit the person in military operations. This book grew out of the April 2008 biennial conference of U.S. Army Research Psychologists, held in Bethesda, Maryland. This meeting was to be my last as Consultant to the Surgeon General for Research Psychology, and I thought it would be a good idea to publish proceedings, which had not been done before. As Consultant, I'd often wished for such a document to help explain to people what it is that Army Research Psychologists "do for a living." In addition to our core group of 71Fs, at the Bethesda 2008 meeting we had several brand-new members, and a number of distinguished retirees, the "grey-beards" of the 71F clan. Together with longtime 71F colleagues Ross Pastel and Mark Vaitkus, I also saw an unusual opportunity to capture some of the history of the Army Research Psychology specialty while providing a representative sample of current 71F research and activities. It seemed to us especially important to do this at a time when the operational demands on the Army and the total force were reaching unprecedented levels, with no sign of easing, and with the Army in turn relying more heavily on research psychology to inform its programs for protecting the health, well being, and performance of Soldiers and their families."

Download or read book Handbook of Nordic New Religions written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When James R. Lewis, one of the editors of the current collection, first moved to Norway in late 2009, he was unprepared to discover that so many researchers in Nordic countries were producing innovative scholarship on new religions and on the new age subculture. In fact, over the past dozen years or so, an increasingly disproportionate percentage of new religions scholars have arisen in Nordic countries and teach at universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic countries. Nordic New Religions, co-edited with Inga B. Tøllefsen, surveys this rich field of study in this area of the world, focusing on the scholarship being produced by scholars in this region of northern Europe.
Download or read book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics written by Judy Green and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.
