Book Where the Cool Kids Hung Out

Download or read book Where the Cool Kids Hung Out written by Steven Scragg and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where the Cool Kids Hung Out is the story of the UEFA Cup's glory years, when it was a tournament that boasted a stronger field of teams than its senior siblings, the European Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Since then it has drifted into its poor current form as the Europa League, the Champions League having siphoned off most of Europe's biggest clubs. Yet the UEFA Cup enjoyed some very stylish years, no more so than during the two-legged final period. It was an era when Ipswich Town swept to glory, Liverpool conditioned themselves to conquer the continent, Tottenham Hotspur twice captured the cup and Dundee United came agonisingly close. It was also a time when Borussia M&önchengladbach made their name, Real Madrid regenerated as a force and Serie A came to dominate. Drawing on an encyclopaedic knowledge of the tournament plus interviews with players, journalists and fans who lived and loved the competition, Steven Scragg brings you the definitive account of the UEFA Cup's halcyon days.

Book Inverting The Pyramid

Download or read book Inverting The Pyramid written by Jonathan Wilson and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An outstanding work the [soccer] book of the decade." -- Sunday Business Post Inverting the Pyramid is a pioneering soccer book that chronicles the evolution of soccer tactics and the lives of the itinerant coaching geniuses who have spread their distinctive styles across the globe. Through Jonathan Wilson's brilliant historical detective work we learn how the South Americans shrugged off the British colonial order to add their own finesse to the game; how the Europeans harnessed individual technique and built it into a team structure; how the game once featured five forwards up front, while now a lone striker is not uncommon. Inverting the Pyramid provides a definitive understanding of the tactical genius of modern-day Barcelona, for the first time showing how their style of play developed from Dutch "Total Football," which itself was an evolution of the Scottish passing game invented by Queens Park in the 1870s and taken on by Tottenham Hotspur in the 1930s. Inverting the Pyramid has been called the "Big Daddy" (Zonal Marking) of soccer tactics books; it is essential for any coach, fan, player, or fantasy manager of the beautiful game.

Book Watch the Throne

Download or read book Watch the Throne written by Luke Williams and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Watch the Throne: The Tactics Behind the Premier League's European Champions, 1999-2019 lifts the lid on the tactics used by Premier League clubs on their respective journeys to Champions League glory. Beginning with Manchester United in 1999 and concluding with Liverpool's 2019 triumph, Watch the Throne provides detailed analysis of how Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool overcame their opposition to claim the ultimate prize in European club football. While United's 1999 victory was an outlier, Liverpool's win in 2005 began a period of domination for Premier League clubs, with eight English finalists in eight seasons from 2004/05 to 2011/12. Changes in tactical trends saw the absence of Premier League finalists between the 2012/13 and 2016/17 seasons as Spanish, German and French sides briefly overtook their Premier League rivals, before an all-English 2019 final between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur marked the technical and tactical recovery of the world's wealthiest football league.

Book excerpt: 50th anniversary edition of the story of the team that caused the last, great FA Cup upset... 'Times have changed but this book is an engrossing reminder for all fans' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 'An essential piece of British football history for fans of any club. Brilliantly researched and written with an undisguised passion' Guy Mowbray, BBC's Match of the Day Today, it seems inconceivable that a team from the lower reaches of the Championship could beat the likes of Chelsea or Manchester United in the FA Cup Final. Yet, on 5 May 1973 that is exactly what happened. Six months earlier, Bob Stokoe took on an ailing Sunderland team, struggling at the bottom of the second division. But the long road to Wembley sees them beating Arsenal and Manchester City to reach the final, where they face Don Revie's mighty Leeds United in a game few expect them to win. Yet what lies ninety minutes ahead is the greatest FA Cup Final shock of all time. Sunderland's victory was, arguably, the last fairytale of recent footballing times. In STOKOE, SUNDERLAND AND '73, Lance Hardy talked with all the Sunderland players who turned out at Wembley that day and to the family of Bob Stokoe, to produce the definitive account of an unforgettable game.

This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 8 May 2013: the day Manchester United fans had dreaded for nearly three decades. Sir Alex Ferguson announced he was to step down as manager of the world's biggest football club after 27 years in charge. The Scot signed off in style with an honours list that confirmed him as the most successful manager in British - and world - history. He would leave United at the age of 71 having won 38 trophies with them, and he would now become a director and ambassador for the club he had served so well. The story of Sir Alex Ferguson is a true rags-to-riches fairytale. Born in Govan, Glasgow in 1941, he played for Queen's Park, Dunfermline and Rangers before retiring in 1974 to begin his managerial career. Before joining Manchester United, he led a struggling Aberdeen side to the league title and the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup and, although he struggled initially at United, his bargain-signing of Eric Cantona secured their first league title in 26 years. An incredible run of success followed, shaped by the emergence of 'Fergie's Fledglings' - Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Nicky Butt. His finest moment was in 1999 when United romped to an unprecedented Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies. Ferguson was knighted the same year. This in-depth biography charts Fergie's unstoppable rise and pays tribute to the greatest manager the world has ever seen.

Book Football Fans Their Information The Web and The Personal Home Page

Download or read book Football Fans Their Information The Web and The Personal Home Page written by Shant Narsesian and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early days of the Internet to the present day, the World Wide Web has developed into one of the world's largest information resources. One of the first genres of web pages, which was also one of the first information resources, was the Personal Home Page (PHP). Over this same period of time, professional football in England has created the world's richest league and by extension an abundance of football-related PHPs. This book examines the role of the PHP as an information resource using the subject area of professional football in England. A holistic approach was taken so as to view the PHP in a broader context, as one information resource amongst many, including non-PHPs and even offline information resources (e.g. reference books). Within this study, football fans were interviewed along with web authors, surveys were carried out (by distributing both online and offline questionnaires) and additional research was also carried out online, examining football-related PHPs and online web collaborations. Results suggest that whilst there are many informational benefits to be found on PHPs, such as plentiful unique information, they have low levels of use amongst football fans. The study concludes by proposing an avenue to the maximisation of the informational benefit of PHPs through a blueprint for a type of communal football website called the Club Community Composite Page (CCCP). Overall, several contributions are made to the field of information science, most notably attaining an improved understanding of PHPs as unique and accurate information providers online and devising new research methods for PHP research. In particular, the method of identification of PHPs developed here will be a useful tool for future researchers of PHPs. The contributions of this work are likely to be of value to researchers working in relevant sub-fields of information science, such as information seeking, web genres, grey literature and virtual communities.
