Book 50 Years of Amity and Enmity

Download or read book 50 Years of Amity and Enmity written by Poppy S. Winanti and published by UGM PRESS. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to offer an alternative lens for regionalism studies in Southeast Asia. Despite of its widely acknowledged status as one of the most successful regionalism, ASEAN still suffers from numerous obstacles. Yet, in the midst of ASEAN uncertain future trajectories, there is only limited consensus on how to approach ASEAN regionalism. Scholars of ASEAN regionalism tend to use ASEAN identity as the main explanation of cooperation among ASEAN member states. However, this approach suffers from limitations. Emphasis on static, traditional, and all-encompassing identity has made issue-specific cooperation and its internal dynamics neglected. The way issue-specific cooperation alters ASEAN architectures also remains understudied. By shifting attentions to issue-specific cooperation, this book attempts to fully grasp the dynamics of 50 years of ASEAN cooperation. Why could ASEAN member states reach consensus in certain issues—ranging from energy, environment, human rights, disaster management, human security, to infectious disease—albeit ASEAN values such as non-interference and informality? How do these practices of cooperation reshape the idea of ASEAN values? Will the changing practice of issue-specific cooperation spillover to the strengthening of ASEAN regionalism?

Book Indonesian Civil Society and Human Rights Advocacy in ASEAN

Download or read book Indonesian Civil Society and Human Rights Advocacy in ASEAN written by Randy W. Nandyatama and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how Indonesian civil society organisations interact with ASEAN to shape human rights institutionalisation in the region. Using Bourdieu-inspired constructivist IR as an analytical lens, the book argues that there are pre-reflexive norms that dominate the field of interaction in the region that shape the way civil society organisations operate. This has resulted in the diverging advocacy practices, thus complicating human rights institutionalisation process in ASEAN.

Book The New Eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book The New Eastern Mediterranean written by Spyridon N. Litsas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an introduction to the Eastern Mediterranean region and introduces the concept of the Eastern Mediterranean as a new regional subsystem. Due to recent events in contemporary international politics, the Eastern Mediterranean can be seen as a laboratory where the balance of power among Great Powers and regional states are being tested. Written by leading academics in their respective fields, this book addresses key developments in the area and argues that the Eastern Mediterranean should be viewed as a distinct region. Particular emphasis is given to the initiatives undertaken by Israel, Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey; the role played by the United States and Russia; and the issues of energy, migration, and Islamic terrorism. Bringing together relevant information and theoretical debates, this book will be of interest to graduate students and academics studying international relations and politics in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as policymakers and journalists who want to have a clearer understanding of developments in the region.

Book Overlapping Regional Orders in the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book Overlapping Regional Orders in the Middle East and North Africa written by Jordi Quero and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused on a set of overlapping international orders of regional scope present in the Middle East and North Africa, this book argues that rules and primary institutions have sanctioned the foreign behavior of the sub-system’s international actors since 1945. The author avoids recent IR trends focused on narrow case studies, instead providing a comprehensive overview of the MENA’s regional politics. The normative content and evolution of multiple international orders are examined, constituting the intra-Arab order, the Arab-Israeli order and the Arab-Iranian order, as well as the expression of the global order in regional interactions. Drawing on Area Studies and English School and constructivist IR theories, the author argues that a plurality of overlapping regional orders have coexisted since 1945, not just one as is commonly suggested in the literature. Each of these orders is integrated by different participants and has developed its own differentiated norms and institutions setting parameters on legitimate behavior. This analytical proposal helps make sense of foreign relations otherwise labeled as incoherent. The book has wide appeal, accessible both to students wishing to learn about the politics, history and sociology of the Middle East, as well as to specialists seeking original research on the functioning of the MENA’s regional orders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the factors that motivated both Syria and Turkey to mend their ties and enter into a friendly relationship with each other since 2002 (when AKP came to power). The study also looks at the factors which contributed towards the abrupt breaking of ties and growing antagonism between the two countries in the aftermath of the 'Arab Uprising'. This book is important because it is concerned with the region, which has remained volatile since the time of its creation, and more importantly, the repercussions of the ongoing turmoil have already transcended the boundaries and are bound to have further serious consequences. Turkey and Syria being the two significant countries. Hence, the relationship between the two has a bigger say in the region than that of the world.

Book The Chinese Constitution of Central Asia

Download or read book The Chinese Constitution of Central Asia written by N. Godehardt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's commitments in Central Asia illustrate how regional foreign policy works and how long-standing principles of Chinese foreign policy might be revised in the near future. China's rise has 'moved' Asia, which is why it seems that what we have traditionally regarded as the geographic and political scope of Asia might actually considerably change in the near future. Nadine Godehardt gives crucial insights into the Chinese expert discourse on Central Asia - analyzing how Chinese experts define Central Asia when they talk and write about policy issues related to China's immediate Western neighbourhood. In this context, she gives an inside perspective on Chinese voices whose meanings are rarely examined in Chinese International Relations studies.
