Februar 1998 jährt sich die Gründung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e. V. zum 50. Male. Sie ist die Nachfolgerin der 1911 in Berlin gegründeten Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft und betreibt - ergänzend zu den Hochschulen - vorwiegend Grundlagenforschung in den Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften. Die Gesellschaft unterhält gegenwärtig 80 eigene Institute und Forschungsstellen, in denen 11000 Mitarbeiter tätig sind, davon 2750 Wissenschaftler, ferner rund 6400 Stipendiaten, Gastwissenschaftler und Doktoranden. Der überwiegend aus öffentlichen Mitteln (von Bund und Ländern) bestrittene Jahresetat betrug 1997 knapp 2 Mrd. DM.Die im Archiv zur Geschichte der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft erarbeitete Festgabe enthält in ihrem ersten Teil die Chronik dieser Gesellschaft mit allen Daten und Fakten zu ihrer Entwicklung aus fünfzig Jahren (einschließlich Quellenbelegen), insbesondere zu Institutsgründungen oder -schließungen, zu Berufungen der Wissenschaftlichen Mitglieder und Angaben über Satzungs- und Strukturänderungen. Das Faktengerüst der Chronik wird problemorientiert von Dokumenten begleitet, in denen u. a. zu Fragen der Finanzierung, der Nachwuchsförderung, dem Verhältnis zu den Universitäten, dem Nutzen der Grundlagenforschung, aber auch zu Zeitfragen wie der Kernenergie oder der Gentechnik Stellung genommen wird. Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft will Interessierten mit diesem reich illustrierten Nachschlagewerk helfen, sich in dieser gemeinnützigen Forschungsorganisation mit all ihren Veränderungen zurechtzufinden, die die Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland entscheidend geprägt hat.Der zweite Teil der Festgabe stellt die rd. 700 Wissenschaftlichen Mitglieder dieser Gesellschaft, in der das Personalprinzip zugleich Strukturprinzip ist, im Bild vor, begleitet von kurzen Angaben über ihre Institutszugehörigkeit. Neben den internen werden von den zahlreichen externen Auszeichnungen nur die Nobelpreise - von Otto Hahn über Konrad Lorenz bis zu Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard und Paul J. Crutzen - verzeichnet, die immerhin 16 Wissenschaftlern der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zuerkannt worden sind.
