Book Hostile Takeovers of Large Jewish Companies 1933 1935

Download or read book Hostile Takeovers of Large Jewish Companies 1933 1935 written by William M. Katin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opportunism combined with anti-Semitism led non-Nazi businessmen to acquire the largest German-Jewish companies in the period 1933–1935. These hostile takeovers were made possible by the Deutsche Bank and Dresdner Bank, which recalled loans previously extended to Jewish firms. Thereby Germany's largest banks obtained new loan fees, new supervisory board seats and became the house banks for the new Gentile-owned firms. The German judiciary did not defend Jewish property rights, because judges shared the same conservative mindset. Scholarship has previously not discovered this 1933–1935 paradigm because of a focus on Berlin government or Nazi Party actions, instead of the Jewish companies. In addition, a failure to distinguish between multi-million dollar enterprises and tiny shops caused scholars to emphasize the year 1938, when thousands of mom-and-pop shops became bankrupt.

Book excerpt: "The German painter Paul Klee (1879-1940) has become one of today's most popular artists. Ninety works by Klee--including drawings, watercolors, and oils, either serious, comical, capricious, or dramatic--have recently been given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by one of the postwar era's leading art dealers and collectors, Heinz Berggruen, and are now published together in this volume for the first time. The works in the distinguished Berggruen Klee Collection, now a permanent part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's holdings, span the career of the artist from his student days in Bern in the 1890s to his death in Muralto-Locarno in 1940. All aspects of Klee both as a draftsman and as a painter are illustrated in these ninety works. Paul Klee is not only one of today's most popular artists, but he is also one of the most written about. In an illuminating addition to the vast literature on Klee, Sabine Rewald opens this study with a candid interview with the artist's only son, Felix, which took place in Bern in February 1986. Accompanied by documentary and informal photographs of the Klee family, it gives pointed and witty insights into the artist's private life. It also offers a behind-the-scenes view of the Bauhaus, where Paul Klee taught and where Felix Klee was a student. Most of the ninety works in the Berggruen Klee Collection are reproduced in full-page colorplates, and each one is accompanied by an extensive entry. These entries incorporate biographical information and quotations from Klee's letters, the latter as yet unpublished in English. The book includes an extensive chronology and a bibliography." -- Provided by publisher

Book Bourgeois Society in Nineteenth century Europe

Download or read book Bourgeois Society in Nineteenth century Europe written by Jürgen Kocka and published by Berg Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the late 18th century, European society has been undergoing a transformation in which the most dynamic element has been the middle class. This provocative book contains the first comprehensive study of 18th and early 19th century bourgeois society by American, European and Israeli scholars in history, anthropology, literature, sociology and law. They examine the specific characteristics of the middle class social types, the extent to which their values and interests altered the texture of 19th century European society and national differences that emerged in their development.
