Beauty is raw, powerful, and often dangerous, but when refined, harnessed, and mastered, it can be incredibly influential. Just as there is a good reason why all humans find sugar to be sweet and a growling beast intimidating, there is an evolutionary logic to why our appearances allow us to communicate and manipulate each other at a subconscious level. Book excerpt: In an age when the supply of gasoline to feed this modern American society has become both more expensive and more scarce questions are being pondered. Inquires like, How can a modern society scale back its dependence on gasoline as a motive source?' Are there genuine alternative power sources?' Are they the answer to a growing crisis?' Recent announcements of hybrids like those from Honda, Toyota, and Ford have really brought attention to this issue. Hybrids that use both gasoline engines and electric motors. Really, though, alternative power sources have been around for as long as the automobile has been. The battle between and among the steam car, the electric and the gas car was fought out in the first couple of decades of the twentieth century. This book explores the ins and outs of that battle. A struggle from which the gasoline car emerged completely victorious. To such an extent that steam cars and electric cars virtually disappeared from the scene for many decades. We will look over all three alternatives, exploring their advantages and disadvantages. We will also look over the obstacles to the steamers and the electrics. Barriers that still exist to a certain extent. Handicaps that caused their disappearance in the first place.

Book The Public Life of Privacy in Nineteenth Century American Literature

Download or read book The Public Life of Privacy in Nineteenth Century American Literature written by Stacey Margolis and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-13 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stacey Margolis rethinks a key chapter in American literary history, challenging the idea that nineteenth-century American culture was dominated by an ideology of privacy that defined subjects in terms of their intentions and desires. She reveals how writers from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Henry James depicted a world in which characters could only be understood—and, more importantly, could only understand themselves—through their public actions. She argues that the social issues that nineteenth-century novelists analyzed—including race, sexuality, the market, and the law—formed integral parts of a broader cultural shift toward understanding individuals not according to their feelings, desires, or intentions, but rather in light of the various inevitable traces they left on the world. Margolis provides readings of fiction by Hawthorne and James as well as Susan Warner, Mark Twain, Charles Chesnutt, and Pauline Hopkins. In these writers’ works, she traces a distinctive novelistic tradition that viewed social developments—such as changes in political partisanship and childhood education and the rise of new politico-legal forms like negligence law—as means for understanding how individuals were shaped by their interactions with society. The Public Life of Privacy in Nineteenth-Century American Literature adds a new level of complexity to understandings of nineteenth-century American culture by illuminating a literary tradition full of accidents, mistakes, and unintended consequences—one in which feelings and desires were often overshadowed by all that was external to the self.

Book Paths Made by Walking

Download or read book Paths Made by Walking written by Amina Tawasil and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There has been as yet very little written about educated women who are aligned with the Islamic Republic of Iran and part of the inner circle of the state. This book takes an entirely new approach to these women and works to disrupt stereotypes that portray them as mouthpieces of the regime by untangling the minutiae of their daily lives and connecting it to their aspirations." - Rose Wellman, author of Feeding Iran: Shi`i Families and the Making of the Islamic Republic "[Tawasil]'s discussion of veiling and staying out of sight is the most complex, comprehensive, insightful, grounded treatment l have ever seen. Her understanding of the howzevi women's perspectives of the meaning of their veiling, of their purposes, their goals for their religious selves is outstanding. ... We do not have anything like this-a study of the world of female religious students and teachers, as women striving to become the religious selves they want to attain." - Mary Hegland, author of Days of Revolution: Political Unrest in an Iranian Village What can women's scholastic pursuits tell us about what building an Islamic state looks like for women who are loyal to its project? And what can an ethnographic study of women who are using Islamic education to transform their conditions in Iran teach us about our own humanity? Paths Made by Walking provides insight into these questions by examining how Iranian women have participated in Islamic education after the 1979 Revolution. The first ethnography on Iranian howzevi (seminarian) women, it reveals how ideologies of womanhood, institutions, and Islamic practices have played a pivotal role in religiously conservative women's mobility in the Middle East. Based on several months of participant-observation, Paths Made by Walking presents an ethnography of the seminarian women whose Islamic education has propelled some of them into powerful positions in Iran, from close ties with the state's Supreme Leader and Chief Justice to membership in the Basij (voluntary military organization). At the same time, these women often choose to remain "hidden" or to otherwise follow practices that seem inscrutable or illogical from a framework of politicized resistance. By centering the howzevi women's senses of self and revealing their complex interpretations of their beliefs, Amina Tawasil offers a fresh perspective on forms of feminine identity that do not always mirror supposedly universal desires for recognition, autonomy, leadership, or authority. Taking readers into the classrooms, living rooms, and compounds where howzevi women participate in intellectual discourse, this book invites readers to reconsider their conceptualizations of the women who support the Islamic Republic of Iran"--

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-05-08
  • ISBN : 1317575156
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Secrecy Law and Society written by Greg Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentators have shown how a ‘culture of security’ ushered in after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 has involved exceptional legal measures and increased recourse to secrecy on the basis of protecting public safety and safeguarding national security. In this context, scholars have largely been preoccupied with the ways that increased security impinges upon civil liberties. While secrecy is justified on public interest grounds, there remains a tension between the need for secrecy and calls for openness, transparency and disclosure. In law, secrecy has implications for the separation of powers, due process, and the rule of law, raising fundamental concerns about open justice, procedural fairness and human rights. Beyond the counterterrorism and legal context, scholarly interest in secrecy has been concerned with the credibility of public and private institutions, as well as the legacies of secrecy across a range of institutional and cultural settings. By exploring the intersections between secrecy, law and society, this volume is a timely and critical intervention in secrecy debates traversing various fields of legal and social inquiry. It will be a useful resource for academic researchers, university teachers and students, as well as law practitioners and policymakers interested in the legal and socio-legal dimensions of secrecy.

Book excerpt: From two leading instructors in business and Buddhism comes a fresh approach to making peace with your finances and creating true abundance. It may seem contradictory that Buddhist teachers Kulananda and Dominic Houlder have also been highly successful in the business arena, but they have learned that Buddhist teachings do not require a life of poverty, and can indeed go hand-in-hand with wealth and prosperity. Mindfulness and Money brings to light the teachings of Buddha as they apply to the money part of life, and shares the stories of others who have found the Buddhist path to freedom, creativity, and abundance. Using the Buddhist Wheel of Life as a starting point, the authors explore the mechanism by which desire for money and material things is confining, and how mastery of desire can free us to live peacefully with our finances. Kulananda and Houlder offer five precepts for living on the Path of Abundance, including kindness, generosity, contentment, honesty, and awareness. Through prescriptive meditations, reflections, and exercises, we can begin to earn and spend more purposefully–the key to finding financial peace, whatever one’s income. An enlightening combination of practical wisdom and spirituality, Mindfulness and Money is a valuable asset for all seekers.
