Book 50 Animals That Have Been to Space

Download or read book 50 Animals That Have Been to Space written by Jennifer Read and published by Formac Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early days of flight, animals have helped researchers learn how to survive in the sky, and their role continues as humanity voyages into outer space. In 1783, a rooster, a duck and a sheep were placed in a basket attached to the first hot-air balloon. In the age of rockets and space travel, many more animals have travelled into orbit, and most have returned safely to earth. This book tells the stories of 50 trips into space, with details about the animals and the scientists involved. The experiments, often designed by students, originate from many countries. The book offers an appealing introduction to the purposes of space exploration and the possibilities of safe space travel. It encourages young readers to engage in real science like the young people they will read about in this book.

The 50 featured in this collection include Voyager's Grand Tour, Apollo 8 and the first crewed mission to the Moon, the first woman in space and the first communication satellite that brought live television to the world. You can also find information on spy satellites, space tourism and climate change. In the early days of space exploration, the focus was on military dominance. Today most missions require the collaboration of several different countries and there's a broader range of research. This is an exciting time we are living in. Space history is unfolding right before our eyes.

Book Molecular Cellular and Clinical Aspects of Angiogenesis

Download or read book Molecular Cellular and Clinical Aspects of Angiogenesis written by Michael E. Maragoudakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion of research activity related to angiogenesis in recent years, and hundreds of laboratories worldwide are actively involved in many aspects of angiogenesiS. The literature on angiogenesis increases exponentially every year, and more than 16,000 peer-reviewed articles have been published the past 25 years, which are scattered in basic science and clinical journals. The complexity of the cascade of events leading to new vessel formation from preexisting ones has challenged scientists in cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, developmental biology, and other fields. With their multidisciplinary approach and the powerful new techniques that have been developed, the progress in understanding angiogenesis has been impressive indeed. Only 12 years ago the mention of an angiogenic factor caused skepticism. Today we have the complete amino-acid fiequence and their genes cloned for at least 9 angiogenic factors. Many laboratories are studying their role in angiogenesis, and several biotechnology firms have a keen interest in commercial developments relative to these molecules. The role of extracellular matrix components in angiogenesis and the interaction of endothelial cells with other cell types such as pericytes, smooth muscle cells, and inflammatory cells have been studied by other groups. This rapid expansion is the result of a realization that in many disease states a common underlying pathology is a derangement in angiogenesis.

Book Animals and Society RLE Social Theory

Download or read book Animals and Society RLE Social Theory written by Keith Tester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals and Society uses a variety of historical sources and a coherent social theory to tell the story of the invention of animal rights. It moves from incidents like the medieval execution of pigs to a discussion of the politics and strategies of modern rights organisations. The book also presents radical interpretations of nineteenth-century animal welfare laws, and the accounts of the Noble Savage. The insights generated by social science are always at the core of the discussion and the author daws on the work of Michel Foucault, Norbert Elias, Claude Levi-Strauss and Mary Douglas. This wide-ranging and accessible book provides a fascinating account of the relations between humans and animals. It raises far-reaching questions about the philosophy, history and politics of animal rights.

Book On Animals

    Book Details:
  • Author : David L. Clough
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2012-02-02
  • ISBN : 056704016X
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book On Animals written by David L. Clough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a project in systematic theology: a rigorous engagement with the Christian tradition in relation to animals under the doctrinal headings of creation, reconciliation and redemption and in dialogue with the Bible and theological voices central to the tradition. The book shows that such engagement with the tradition with the question of the animal in mind produces surprising answers that challenge modern anthropocentric assumptions. For the most part, therefore, the novelty of the project lies in the questions raised, rather than the proposal of innovative answers to it. The transformation in our thinking about animals for which the book argues results in the main from looking squarely for the first time at the sum of what we are already committed to believing about other animals and their place in God's creation.
