Book The Release of Catecholamines from Adrenergic Neurons

Download or read book The Release of Catecholamines from Adrenergic Neurons written by David M. Paton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Release of Catecholamines from Adrenergic Neurons covers the advances in understanding the mechanism of catecholamine release and other neurotransmitters from adrenergic neurons. This book is organized into four sections encompassing 18 chapters. The opening section surveys biochemical studies of the mechanism and regulation of nerve stimulation. This section examines the role of calcium, prostaglandins, and presynaptic adrenoceptors and muscarine receptors in catecholamine release. The next section describes the modification of catecholamine release by several drugs, including adrenergic neuron blocking agents, narcotic analgesics, opioid peptides, lysergic acid diethylamide, anesthetics, alcohols, and adenosine and adenine nucleotides. These topics are followed by discussions of catecholamine release induced by cations and other drugs, such as nicotinic agonists, calcium ionophores, veratridine, scorption venom, and phenethylamines. The final section deals with the biochemical assessment of peripheral adrenergic activity and the clinical pharmacology of adrenergic neuron blocking agents. This book is intended for pharmacologists, neurologists, researchers, and advanced students.

Book Smooth Muscle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edwin Daniel
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 1468427512
  • Pages : 712 pages

Download or read book Smooth Muscle written by Edwin Daniel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the actions of drugs on smooth muscle has been a preoccupation of many pharmacologists almost from the beginning of the discipline. To a con siderable degree, the development of theories to explain drug actions on smooth muscle has occurred somewhat independently of the development of our knowledge of the physiology, biochemistry, and biophysics of smooth muscle. This knowledge has developed rapidly in the past decade, and some of its consequences for our understanding of drug-receptor interactions in smooth muscle have not always been fully appreciated or accepted. One of the purposes of this volume is to provide pharmacologists with some understanding of the physiology, biophysics, and bio chemistry of smooth muscle and of related advances in methodology so as to facilitate the incorporation of such knowledge and related methods into future pharmacological studies of smooth muscle and drug interactions. Another purpose of the book is to provide both graduate students and in vestigators in pharmacology and related disciplines with a summary of the numerous methods that have evolved or are available for the study of drug and smooth muscle interactions, and, in particular, to highlight their possible uses and limitations. Perhaps, because of the diversity in content and difficulty of these methods, there has to our knowledge never been a previous attempt to bring them together in one place. We have not, of course, succeeded entirely in this objective.

The radiological and histological bone changes produced by calcitonin; calcitonin as an ultimobranchial hormone; and the effects of calcium intake levels on the response to exogenous rat are also covered. The book further tackles bone culture studies with thyrocalcitonin; the observation made on the dense granules in bat thyroid parafollicular cells; and the study of the bovine parturient paresis and hypocalcemia. A chapter is devoted to the inhibition of thyrocalcitonin bone resorption in tissue culture. Another section focuses on the methods for secretory granules staining. Book Drug Development

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy S. Gaginella
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 1999-09-01
  • ISBN : 1592592023
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book Drug Development written by Timothy S. Gaginella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of molecular techniques to gastroenterology continues to yield important advances in the development of drugs to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Important new drugs have emerged through the collaborative and complementary efforts of basic scientists, clinicians, and clinical researchers in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The challenge has been exciting, with a few surprises along the way. Consider peptic ulcer disease as an example. The discovery of H receptors and the availability of potent and 2 selective H-receptor antagonists signaled the beginning of a new era 2 in the treatment of gastric hypersecretory states and peptic ulcers. Introduction of proton pump inhibitors offered another therapeutic option. Though H-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors 2 are important and useful drugs, the discovery of the link between H. pylori infection and peptic ulcer disease has led to even more effective pharmacotherapeutic regimens. Our intent in Drug Development: Molecular Targets for GI Diseases is to bring together hands-on experts to review promising areas of gastrointestinal pharmacology. The contemporary topics covered, from a mechanistic viewpoint, are relevant to gastrointestinal inflammation and motility disorders. Authoritative opinions are offered on both future research directions and potential applications for new therapies.
