Book excerpt: Do you love pets but feel powerless to help those less fortunate than yours? Ever wonder how you can improve the lives of the homeless cats living in your community, or what you can do to convince your neighbors to fix their dog? How you can be an effective animal advocate when you don't have a big budget, or the best way to approach a vet for help with a stray animal? These questions, and more, are answered in $5 For a Cat Head. Because none of the animals featured in the book could write their own histories, the author recounts their lives. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, never is the wonder and mystery of these companion animals overlooked. After reading $5 For a Cat Head, you will:⢠Realize why spay/neuter surgery should be your first priority when promoting pet welfare.⢠Understand some of the realities low-income pet owners face when trying to care for their pets.⢠Consider some issues involved in getting dogs off chains.⢠Explore feral cat concerns.⢠Learn steps you can take to encourage feline spay/neuter surgery at an early age.⢠Discover ways you can help others get their pets fixed.⢠Recognize your responsibilities when offering homeless pets for adoption.⢠Review some of the reasons people do not properly care for their pets.⢠Determine potential interventions with injured animals.⢠Discern the best organizations to which you can donate your money or time.⢠Find inspiration to improve pet welfare in your community.⢠Gain perspective on the catchphrase 'no-kill'.Drawing upon experience gained over 23 years, $5 For a Cat Head shows you how to promote pet welfare by focusing first on efforts to fix pets and halt the reproduction of unwanted animals. It provides practical tips that will jump-start your efforts to help pets in your community while telling stories of the amazing animals encountered over decades of animal welfare work. You'll rediscover the joy, grace, comfort, peace, and beauty of those precious cats and dogs who stand with us as our beloved companions.

Book Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar

Download or read book Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar written by Carl Pollard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-08-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most complete exposition of the theory of head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG), introduced in the authors' Information-Based Syntax and Semantics. HPSG provides an integration of key ideas from the various disciplines of cognitive science, drawing on results from diverse approaches to syntactic theory, situation semantics, data type theory, and knowledge representation. The result is a conception of grammar as a set of declarative and order-independent constraints, a conception well suited to modelling human language processing. This self-contained volume demonstrates the applicability of the HPSG approach to a wide range of empirical problems, including a number which have occupied center-stage within syntactic theory for well over twenty years: the control of "understood" subjects, long-distance dependencies conventionally treated in terms of wh-movement, and syntactic constraints on the relationship between various kinds of pronouns and their antecedents. The authors make clear how their approach compares with and improves upon approaches undertaken in other frameworks, including in particular the government-binding theory of Noam Chomsky.

Book Morgantina Studies Volume II

Download or read book Morgantina Studies Volume II written by Theodore V. Buttrey and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues documenting the well-known excavations at Morgantina, a Greek town in central Sicily, in a presentation of the largest body of coins ever unearthed at an Italian site and published as a group. The excavations, conducted by Princeton University, The University of Illinois, and The University of Virginia between 1955 and 1981, produced nearly 10,000 identifiable coins--most of them at of Sicilian Greek and Roman issues, struck before the end of the first century B.C. The numismatic evidence not only made possible the initial identification fo the side as Morgantina, but has subsequently opened the way to reconstructing the history of early Roman Republican coinage and the bronze coinage of Greek Sicily. The catalogue presents a full list of the coins found at Morgantina through the 1981 season, with discussion of significant issues and illustrations of 679 specimens. A completed corpus and study of the coins struck at Morgantina is also included. Theodore V. Buttrey is Professor Emeritus of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. Kenan T. Erim is Professor of Classical Archaeology at New York University. Thomas. D. Groves is a graduate student in the Department of Classical Archaeology at Princeton University. R. Ross Holloway is Professor of Classical Archaeology at Brown University. Originally published in 1990.
